Default Everything Happens for a Reason: 108 Predictions for Season Four

LOCKE: My sister, Jeanie, died when I was a boy. Fell off the monkey bars and broke her neck. And my mother, well, my foster mother, she blamed herself, of course -- thought she wasn't watching close enough. So, she stopped eating, stopped sleeping. The neighbors started talking, afraid she might do something to herself, I guess. Anyway, about 6 months after Jeanie's funeral this golden retriever comes padding up our driveway, walks right into our house, sits down on the floor, and looks right at my mother, there on the couch. And my mother looks back at the dog. After about a minute of this, of them both staring at each other like that, my mother burst into tears. Beautiful dog, no tags, no collar, healthy, and sweet. The dog slept in Jeanie's old room, on Jeanie's old bed and stayed with us until my mother passed 5 years later. Then, disappeared back to wherever it was she came from in the first place.
KATE: So, you're saying the dog was your sister?
LOCKE: Well, that would be silly.

John Locke always has some pretty crazy ideas in his head. He firmly believes some things that would be unthinkable for most people. Even a man of faith, though, has his own limits. Some ideas are too silly even for him to entertain. Since the airing of Through the Looking Glass, people have written a large number of ideas out there that even Locke would consider to be downright crazy. Let’s call this the Golden Retriever Rule: if any statement would seem ridiculous even to John Locke, then its odds of being true on the show are very unlikely. Keep this rule in mind as we begin to make predictions about the upcoming season.

The list below contains 108 predictions about the events of Season Four. Official podcasts and genuine spoilers have already begun to emerge, so most of these predictions will seem very safe and obvious. Reading this essay also might seem a bit less fun than some of the more exotic theories out there. Most of the grand theories begin by making a few major assumptions about the show, and then craft a series of explanations to fit those assumptions. I only use one assumption when writing about the show: Lost is primarily a character-based drama. The title Lost refers to the characters, and the story has always been about how this group of Lost souls struggles to find themselves. I think that this statement holds up remarkably well when you examine the sample set of all episodes. With that idea in mind, where are the characters and their stories headed?

I realize that my assumption might turn out to be false. I can assure you that many of these predictions will turn out to be false. Some of the predictions are based on what I believe to be true and others are about what I hope to be true. Nevertheless, like anyone else not named Lindelof or Cuse, I can only offer my opinions and my reasons.
