If the Black Swarm was the incarnation of the devil then why would it not have taken Locke. It is shown in the same frame as Locke in one episode and it would have surely taken him.

I think islandbum is saying if your faith is weak or gone, you'll be taken. Locke's faith was strong when he met Smokie.

I dont think Smokie is the Devil, however. Coz no sonic fence is ever gonna keep the Devil from your door, brutha.

What about the three-headed dog that guards hell? It does break into at least three seperate sections when it dissapates.

The 3-headed dog is called Cerberus and some forum posters were calling the smoke that for awhile. I dont think Cerberus judged anyone before they got into Hell tho, I think he was supposed to keep souls from escaping.
