The Real Purgatory theory

I believe that the island is Purgatory. I know this theory has been bounced around for a while now and people began to pass it off as time went on. im also aware that the producers deny all theories that are put to them. Please bare in mind that they could be lying and probably change there mind on a regular basis! in reply to other members saying that the island is "Hell" i do not agree. Hell and Purgotory are two entirely different places.

Purgatory is a place where you go when God has not decided where you are to go in the afterlife. I believe that the choices the "Survivors" (I actually believe that they are all really dead) are given an opportunity to redeem themselves on the island. If they prove themselves theyll recieve eternal life in the Kingdom of God and if they dont they will perish in Hell.

This theory also supports the importance of the newborn babys being taken by various people. Its a known fact that in Christianity it is said that babies who die before Baptism are said to go to Purgatory as they have not proved whether they are good or bad people yet. All of the Lost characters could be described as good or bad respectively, as they have good and bad qaulities.

I believe that the characters that "Die" on the island have been given there time to prove themselves and "God" has made his decision.
i also think that the "others" are all part of the "Survivors" test of character.
Im fully aware that this post does not explain a hell of a lot of things that are going on in the island, (Dharma, Polar bears, 4 toes!) but these things could all be for show and to confuse us all.

I hav'nt icluded much to support my theory as it would take too long but i would be happy to go into far more detail about my theory if anybody would like me too. At the moment im going to just see wot you all think.

finnaly i dont believe that the producers will stick to one single theory, i think they will continue to drag Lost out until the viewings drop (NEVER!) which is cool with me!

actually, sorry dude, but you've got the facts a little skewed. Several articles have been released lately discussing the producer's (JJ and Carlton) plan for ending the show after 4 seasons, or 5 at the most. It is ABC that wants to keep the show running. The producers want the show to end because they have it planned out for four seasons. They knew the beginning and the end from the time they started writing. They knew what the island was, what they wanted it to be, who the others are, etc. They ARE NOT MAKING IT UP AS THEY GO. I don't know how many times it needs to be said before people believe it, but i'll say it once more.

As for the theory..... I loved the purgatory theory in the beginning. But as the show progressing, and as the producers deny it time and time again, i regret to say that i don't think it's possible. It's certainly plausible, but i think it's headed down a different route.

keep on developing the theory dude. You could be right, and myself wrong. But i'd find it a strange occurance if the producers really were lying. The fans would be too angry.

The fans would not be angry if the producers were lying about the end of a show 2 1/2 years before the end. If anything, I'd be relieved that it was kept secret all the way to the last episode.

I'm the kind of person who doesn't read the back cover of movies, nor do I like watching a movie or show with someone whose already seen it. ABC likes suprise endings and this show is hardly halfway through. If anything, all theories are wrong.

I'd be pretty angry if they producers had been lieing to us. so i really hope they havent and the purgatory theory is wrong. but then again the purgatory theory just irritates me in general. yeah i can see the whole good vs bad and people accepting themselves n then getting killed or hence leaving purgatory as a good theory but it just leaves to many things that would be pointless, what would be the point in the dharma iniative and the others taking some of the losties prisoner. surely if it was just purgatory it would just be about coming to terms with things and survival and not have all the mysterys, like the big electromagnet and the button. the others, Desmond, Rosseau, the black rock, and especially the Dharma iniative etc.. are completely pointless if it was purgatory

Yeah, I'm with you there, Michelle. Theology as discussions on symbolism and meaning is all well and fine but using it as an actual narrative plot explanation just seems like a cheap cop-out. Like one of those 'Oh, it was just a dream' stories which I hate.

It's like writing a whole thesis and using it to wipe your behind.

yeah i can imagine it now the last episode n hurley wakes up "wow what a weird dream" n then goes to go to work at that chicken place. i would be so dissapointed
