For everyone at LD, this is the best I?ve got. If you read it, thanks for getting though it, I know it?s long. And, I?d love to know what you think of the ideas.
I recently had some thoughts on the nature of the Dharma Initiative?s project on the island. It combines some aspect of religion and science. I am not a theologist nor am I a quantum physicist. For any Buddhists out there I sincerely apologize for any mistreatment of your religion, it is not intentional and is only used to put forward what I think may be going on. To any quantum physicists I offend with my wacky theory?well, yours is a wacky field of science in general.
I believe the Dharma scientists made a quantum physics discovery with religious implications (hence the name) and are trying and experiment on the island due to a naturally occurring phenomenon they found there.
Dharma?s Discovery - Quantum Multiverse?
I have a (very) limited knowledge of quantum physics. One of the more interesting things I have heard is that when you get down to a small enough scale, particles behave in a seemingly erratic, unpredictable, and in some cases impossible manner. Some quantum particles are said to exist and then cease to exist, usually very quickly (nanoseconds, picoseconds, etc). This leads me to an interesting thought. That being that the story may be that the Dharma scientists discovered proof of the multiverse theory. That is, that we exist in a universe that has an infinite number of alternates each representing every possible permutation of matter, energy, and state and spatial position possible (i.e. infinite). Some of the closest universes would be exactly the same as ours with the only difference being the position of a single atom. It seems to me that if they all simultaneously exist, then one possible explanation for quantum particles behavior is this. They do not wink in and out of existence, but are merely reacting in a perfectly natural way to outside forces such as gravity, electromagnetism, etc. They simply are able to move between the different multiverses by some principle of quantum physics. Consider this experiment as an example. 50 sheets of glass are set standing up with 1 inch between the faces of the glass. You are able to see only one sheet, and only through the thin edge. A bullet is fired through all of the panes and travels in a perfectly normal, predictable pattern according to the laws of physics. From your viewpoint however, the bullet appears and then disappears in a split second, only seeming to wink in and out of existence as it, in fact, travels its full course. The Dharma scientists may have found that this multiverse may already be at work in an unusual way.
Religious Implications - Karmic Multiverse
The name Dharma Initiative piqued my interest when I first heard it. The word Dharma refers to (really, my apologies!) a state of being on the correct spiritual path to guide you to a destiny in which you can advance to a higher karmic state. Think of it like this, if you put your hand on a stove, it burns. This is simple cause and effect. A similar cause and effect happens over the long spans of your incarnation and reincarnations. Live a good life and you move toward a better place in your next life. Live a bad life, and you move to a worse one. If karma is considered the effect, then dharma can be considered the cause for the purpose of my point. It is a common theme among nearly all religions that you go on after death. Christianity has the two extremes of heaven and hell. This would be more akin to having an infinite number of subtle variants between the two extremes, a karmic multiverse if you will.
The Island Link ? the system, the numbers and data corruption
The island afforded the Dharma scientists to conduct an experiment, using the electromagnetic anomaly to attract and use the quantum particles to access the karmic multiverse and can use it to determine the correct dharmic line for any one (or every one) individual. Like a roadmap of your ideal destiny. You have the means by which to advance anyone or even all mankind to a state of enlightenment without them ever having to try to find their way on their own. It would make life an open book test, without the clutter of hard choices, and a guarantee of karmic reward. By channeling the quantum particles concentrated by the electromagnetic anomaly in a specific pattern (one perhaps represented as numbers, like maybe THOSE numbers) this communication between the computer and the karmic implications of one?s decisions and actions is then kept open and the data coming in is pure. Because of the nature of quantum particles, the pattern would degrade over time, even in a powerful field like the one on the island. The pattern correction would have to be entered over and over again on a regular basis. Enter the numbers, the data stream remains true, and the computer interprets the correct information as to your karmic fate. Don?t enter the numbers and the data stream corrupts leading to all kinds of errors and perhaps dire consequences. In order to compensate for the loss of the multiverse data, the system would need data from an immediate source. Like adding variables to your choices and actions in this universe (?I think I crashed your plane?). In order to process this new local data the system would need one other thing?
Cerberus ? The ultimate robotic assistant of karma
I think that Cerberus, or Smokie as it is referred to in the posts, is in fact far more than some complex security system. I believe it to be the eyes, ears, memory, portable scanner, interface and enforcer of karmic advancement, subject to the system interpreting the data. It is in short the means by which the system acts on the world around it. I?ll be posting the theory I have on Cerberus on the ?Smokie? thread once I have it together (barring and objections). I?ll put down what I think I have so far and why. I?m still working out how these fit together. The information on it is thin at best and there are lots of holes in the theory but there it is if you want to continue.
One Other Thing- (kinda sketchy)
The kidnappings that the others are conducting seem to have a pattern and after the recent episodes I think I know what it is. The others may have all become sterile due to prolonged exposure to the islands electromagnetic field. The big clues:
1. The others highest priority is children. Alex, Walt, Aaron and the tailie kids were their first order of business.
2. No children are seen in the premier when all of the others come out to watch the plane come down.
3. Ben?s tumor may be something like the ?cancer pockets? said to be found around high tension power lines or the whole cell phone/ brain tumor thing.
Well that?s all I can think of for now. I hope that I gave you some food for thought. If you want me to clarify anything, ask and I?ll answer, if I can. Anyone who feels like shooting holes in these ideas, I am prepared for the hits and will smile at the sound of incoming?you may fire when you are ready Gridley.

That's pretty fascinating stuff. I feel kinda stupid suddenly.

I hope that if your theory is true that the showrunners will be able to put it in a more digestable explanation in the end.

One note tho: that must be a pretty impressive computer to be able to monitor the multiverse. Why would it take the shape of an island tho? And the Swan/Signet Station would be a fairly important station - wouldn't it be better to secure it much better than it has been? And shouldn't you explain the task better to the button pushers than what was in the training videos?

The real explanation will probably be explained a over many episodes, and in small pieces so It will give people time to let the audience digest all the info. Really, I think the writers already have something in mind by way of explanation. All this stuff popped (or pooped) into my head all at once. It was actually kind of cool how it all seemed to fit together. Sleep deprivation rules! Either that or this is just what happens to my brain when I run out of show.
