I think, most of the hallucinations we have seen on lost may be manifestations of the smoke monster. Yemi very clearly seemed to be the smoke monster in last night's episode.

The hallucinations all seem to be manifestation of guilt or other feelings that stem from the characters pasts. Jack seeing his father was a forced confrontation with his guilt over their failed relationship, the boar that chased sawyer was like his guilt for killing that man who was innocent, seeing yemi has always seemed to be eko trying to confront his guilt that it was his fault that yemi was killed, (and also his faith that yemi is leading him). You might even say that Dave forced Hurley to confront the discomforts of his past, and his eating habits. Kate's horse wasn't really guilt, but it was a connection to her past that forced her to think about her guilt for killing her stepfather.

Last season when Eko confronted the monster, it seemed to be scanning his past. Images from his flashbacks could be seen in the smoke.

It may also be possible that the smoke monster is the source of the whispers, and that whispers are really voices from the characters past. This is more of a stretch, but still possible.

okay, also, eko was the only one to be confronted with his past and not feel guilt for his actions. Reason why eko dies?

and whispers, i am fairly sure, are the voices of the lostie's pasts.

When shannon is shot, one of the whispers says "Dying sucks." which is what boone says in her flashback.
Also in outlaws, one of the whispers says "I'll come back around." Which is what the guy in sawyer's flashback said. I'll try to remember more cases where this is true.

I agree, the voices are seeming to be from the past of the losties but why is it that they hear the whispers whenever there are "others" around? Would this further implicate that the others are indeed aware and controlling "smokie" in one form or another?

When Jack, Sawyer, and Kate were captured they heard whispers and Jack told everone to run. When the women from Anna Lucia's section got captured they heard whispers (right afterwards Shannon got shot) I know that there are more. I will post them as they come to me.

Hey, what about when that girl went missing on the treck back to the s1 losties? I think they heard whispers too!

hmm, yes but my point is it isn't only when they see the others. That is only a few instances. Sayid hears whispers returning from Rousseau, Sawyer hears whispers in outlaws, Jack hears whispers in Tale of Two Cities, Ana lucia and Co. hear whispers when she shoots shannon. All of these times there were no others.

Although, i don't think it is that important.

Actually, I'm pretty sure you're dead on the money. It makes perfect sense. Smokie really does seem to be linked to repentance in some way - what the hell is it? Is it a man-made construct or a spiritual one?

The whispers when the Others captured Jack-Sawyer-Kate-Hurley were probably coincidental - Smokie was around when the Others attacked.

I think the Others know about Smokie - part of the Big Experiment - which is why they're staying on another island altogether. Maybe dressing up as natives keeps them safe from it - hah, that's a stretch!

The girl who disappeared when the Tailies were heading back to Jack's playground (who is the air stewardress Cindy who was flirting with Jack on the plane) was probably taken by Smokie - probably because she was a bad, bad girl back in the real world - not by the Others. And that clicking sound it makes reminds me of the Predator.
