maybe it's the reason the others are still on the island - long after the Initiative became inoperative. They know how to get off the island, but they don't. They, what, love the scenery so much they built a mini suburbia smack bang in the middle?

it's probably not the smartest to theorise this early into the season, but the island's evident healing powers could be the only reason they're still there. Say, the infamous Sickness infected several subjects and experimenters alike, and the island is their cure.

I swear I won't use a cliche like "live together, die alone", here, but..
