ok i think i have a very interesting theory. the trees being ripped up every time the smoke monster is near is because it is the monster. just like we know the monster can read mind like when it read ekos in the "23rd palsm."

its a clound of black smoe right? if it could imatate machine noise could is not imatate things like...polar bears when it read walts mind? a black horse when it read kates? Jacks Father when it read his? walt when is read shannons?

um... we know that trees are ripped up due to the monster. We have known that since season 1. And i have heard many people speculate about the the hallucinations being manifestations of the monster. But i certainly do not think this is the case.

it is my opinion that these things are from the island. Season one was all about the island, and the characters relationships with it. Jack saw his father because of the guilt the felt for their failed realtionship. That whole episode was about him feeling guilty about what went on between them, and about jack needing to let go of that guilt. His hallucinations that his father was there was simply a manifestation of his guilt.

The horse and the polar bear are explaned simply: There is a zoology research station on the island. We know this. And in the swan orientation video we saw polar bears. So that explains that.

As for walt, i am more inclined to believe the speculation that Walt was somehow projecting an image of himself to shannon, using his "powers". Or that it was a simple hallucination sent by the island.

It's an interesting theory, but as i said i have heard it a lot before and i don't believe any more this time.

I agree that this is the most likely, most plausable explanation, but even so, why put them in there at all, the horse in particular? Same goes with the wild boar "talking" to Sawyer. I mean, there's got to be a reason.

Yeah, but again, what's the point? To throw us off or something?

the point is obvious. To further their back story. Kate's horse furthered her backstory, because it was in her flashback as well.

Walt's polar bear made us question his powers, because we there was a polar bear in his comic book. Also when walt is saying goodbye to him when he is like 2, michael gives walt a stuffed polar bear.

Walt appearing furthered shannon's story in that she needed someone to believe in her. Sayid thought she was crazy because she said she was seeing someone who wasn't there. She finally found sayid to believe in her, then she died.

often times these things don't have a purpose other than for character developement.

I suppose in all liklihood you're right. Even so, it seems a bit shallow for Lost... I suppose I'm looking too far into it.
