Desmond at one point asked him about what it was like in the marines, or what ev., then Melvin (was that his name?) Talked about it later as well.

Kelvin Inman was the guy's name, and the character in Sayid's episode was listed as "Joe Inman", but Lindelof and Cuse confirmed that it's the same person.

I'm puzzled about whether he was joking when he said he joined Dharma. A lot of people interpreted it as it was, but I thought he was being sarcastic.

I think Kelvin was saying it as if he had thought it was a bigger deal than the marines to join Dharma....Not that he had joined --- it had turned out to be a bust and was a horrible decision on his part.

I find it odd that there's so many military men linked to the numbers: Inman, Desmond, Sam Toomey/Leonard Simms and, for all we know, Radzinksy might've been as well.

there could be so many military men because maybe the military help set it up or something, we still dont know what happened to the Dharma iniative on the island so maybe after the "incident" they sent in military people for some reasons, i dunno maybe the scientists went vigalante or something

Apparently Calvin volunteered for the hatch assignment, according to what he told Desmond, so probably military or ex-military personnel were asked to volunteer for a top-secret assignment in conjunction with the Dharma Initiative for scientific experimental studies or something. But it seems like Calvin was posted there for so long without any contact that he wanted off the island in the worst way. He probably thinks that they've forgotten him but since he knew how important it was to keep pushing the button he tried to trick Des into doing it.
