Dharma had the island for expermenints perposes can prove by ( horse,shark,polor beer). I think they tried to remake people? and put them down in the hatchs for test's, but sometime along they made a beast that was outa controll, killed all the dharma ppl. Then the people (others) in hatch first, came out and fell under the leadership of the monster. But The Foot! It has 4 toes and only the foot? Because it was knocked over! Or is the statue not complete yet? hmmmmmmmmmmm? The smoke killes the bad ppl and sense they didnt kill them, there tho "good people"! Well Locke and jack had expericnes with the smoke? Maybe thats why they good people!

good thoughts, i agree that dharma was doin experiments on the island, however i think "the others" are the dharma scientists, maybe they became dissoulsioned with the whole dahrma institute and all that n went crazy (which would explain the fake beards n stuff) n are now tryin to stop any new people comin 2 the island incase they start experimenting again or maybe they take the good people because they are good for food for the black smoke monster thing i really dunno lol
