Michael appears to have been brainwashed by the Dharma people, the scientists living in the other hatches. Or he just wants everyone to believe that. Anna Lucia was expendable, she was a "bad" subject anyway, (a good actress and character) but too violent, too headstrong to be of any use to Dharma, and too threatening to the "others" of the tents. After all, she had killed one of them.
I think Michael was really on a mission to off Henry - or maybe both Henry and Anna Lucia. Henry had some plan that Dharma or the outcasts didn't like. Henry was one of the outcast people of the tents, maybe he'd been a little too long in the jungle. Whatever the plan was, I think Dharma promised Michael he'd get Walt back if he took care of Henry. After shooting the women, Michael wounded himself and, of course, he's going to make it look like Henry did it all - he's setting Henry up to be killed by the Losties. The killing of Anna Lucia would enrage the Losties enough to kill Henry. If Michael had killed Henry himself, right away he's in big trouble with the gang. Michael would have had to explain himself, all about Dharma, and all about his deal with Dharma. And if he did that, the deal was off. But Dharma's not going to give Walt up, not if they've discovered Walt's extra powers. About Libby - I think Libby will survive. She has her own agenda. She was in the same mental hospital as Hurley when he was there - and he was there after sinking a dock that killed some people. I think one of those people was Libby's boyfriend/husband. She had a mental breakdown over the death and discovers she's ended up in the same hospital as Hurley. She plots to get her revenge on Hurley after they're released and follows him to Australia. Somewhere along the way, she learns of Hurley's big Lotto win and changes her plan. She wants to get very close to Hurley, make him fall in love, marry her. Once she has all his money - or the secret of the numbers - THEN she'll off Hurley. She's obviously out of touch with her feelings. Libby's character is one to watch. Just my humble thoughts. |

Hey, this is my first post, so uhm, hi.
Anyhoo, I believe that Mike would do anything for the safety of Walt. I feel that there are a number of reasons why Mike shot AnaLucia & Libby. Mike could have been brainwashed into doing the others' bidding. But I seriously don't think so. Mike could have been given an ultimatum. "Do this, this and this, and then you'll get to see your boy (or similar)." I feel this is the better of the two theories.

The deal was that as long as Michael complied with the demands of the Others (Release Henry and bring the chosen four to them), he would be reunited with his son. Since nothing in the world mattered more to him than that, he was forced to take all measures to ensure that the plan was executed perfectly.
He went into the hatch and saw Anna Lucia (sp). Maybe he actually intended to kill her as she would be a viable threat to his intentions. She probably wouldn't have allowed him to drag those four off into the jungle on his wild goose chase. He couldn't risk that, so he shot her. Then came the surprise for him - Libby. He didn't want to kill her obviously, but because she witnessed what he'd just done, he was left with no alternative. To complete the act, he had to shoot himself to make it appear as though Henry had violently escaped on his own behalf. And we now know that Henry was the leader of the Others all along, which is why it was so imperative that he escape. |

I don't think that Michael "planned" to kill Ana Lucia or Libby; Ana Lucia happened to be guarding Henry, and Michael had to be able to accomplish several things at the same time: a) allow Henry to escape, and b) bring back the folks on the list. To accomplish all of that he had to get past whoever was guarding Henry, and at the same time raise enough anger in the rest of the survivors that they would follow him to the "others" campsite. It also helped that Michael must have had some built-up resentment to Ana Lucia for the way she treated them when the "Tailees" captured them. Finally, I think (and this is a developing theory of mine) that Henry may have manipulated Michael to killing Ana Lucia through control of his emotions even if he didn't want to (remember that Michael apologized to Ana Lucia just before he shot her).I think Libby was shot as an accident, but its interesting as to how it now affect Hurley.
The other theory is that since both these actresses have been 'trouble on the set" this may have been an elegant way to get them out of the scene. |

Why he shot them - because he couldn't risk having them talk. Michael had to let the guy loose, and that was his only option.
