Default The Black Rock

hi, im new to this so i have no idea wheter im posting this in the right section or whatever, im also from the UK and only just seen the end of series one so please bear with me if any of what im saying has already been discussed or proved wrong somewhere else

right here we go

firstly the black rock doesnt appear in my view to be a slave ship as locke said it was, it had dynamite on board and dynamite was invented in 1866 and not used widely until the 1870's and the slave trade had finished long before then, slavery continued in america un til 1862 but the trading of slaves was stopped pretty much as soon as the British banned slavery im not quite sure when this is but i know it was well before 1866. Also the way the "slaves" were chained up is not that of a normal slave ship, slave ships carried thousands of slaves at a time and they were all layed end to end in the ship not chained up to the sides of the ship (well in the middle of the sea they cant really escape can they) in my view it can only be a ship carrying prisoners to australia from britain in the 1870's that like the plane got caught off course and crashed on the island.

however i believe that the ship is possibly a deception by possibly the others or whatever it is in the hatch to make the island appear older than it is the ship to me looked in very good condition for one that had been left out on land for the last 130 or so years, it would have decayed a lot more than it had and there would be very few remains of it if it was really that old, we all no wood decays but it will only survive in the condition that it appeared to be in in conditions which have no oxygen i.e underwater because of this i started to think that possibly the island might be one such as atlantis that had been sunken and had now risen (which would explain why the ship was so far inland) but i now believe that someone is trying to trick the survivors into believeing that there have been people on the island longer than there has. this is because of adam and eve the two skeletons found in the cave, they have been there for 40 years and have decayed like they should have done but even if the ship had been there for 40 years it would in my opinion have looked more decayed more than it had done.

i also think that possibly the black rock is the key to the island, we know there is somewhat of a magnetic pull on the island as the compas was out i seem to remember when sayid was tryin to tell jack where north was, now heres the interesting part when magnets were first discovered it was in the form of a rock, basalt which at the time i believe (correct me if im wrong) was known as the black rock

anyway ill leave it with just those few things to think about, please let me know what you think or if u need anything explaing better im not very good at explaining things sorry

Wow. Very cool theories and ideas. I wonder how they'll play out. I'm not so sure about the whole Atlantis thing - it seems a little far fetched and not really played out. And also, I'm not sure how significant the Black Rock is - it doesn't really have much roll if future episodes (as in season 2).

thanks, the atlantis thing seems a bit far fetched to me too that y i reckon the ship was put there by the others or something to confuse visitors to the island, i think you could be right about the Black Rock not being that important but one thing just bugs me if the Black Rock wasn't that important why wouldn't it be just that a black rock rather than a ship that somehow got 2 miles in land

I don't know, but with time the tide could have gone out/flooding/etc.

the tide going out is possible but, unlikely if the sea level had at one point been that high n the tide had gone out, it would not be jungle that the black rock was in it would be beach because the sea would have worn away the land to sand as it was going out and flooding or a tsunami would have caused more damage to the land and the ship, the black rock only appeared to have one hole in the side which seems to suggest that it was once sunk

I think the Black Rock is bogus. It's just sumthing minor to 1) throw you off and 2) for the writer's to have an excuse/method to get the dynamite. Other than that, it's worthless.

One observation though - the whole - what was it called - dark area? The bad place where bad stuff happened or whatever, where the Black Rock was. What's up with that?

yeah, that's right. Though I do feel the writers and actors overplayed it a bit.

I don't think it's significant.... haven't mentioned it in quite a while.
