We know the cause of the plane crash is a fluke by Desmond not pushing the button on time. The Others couldn't possibly have planned for that to happen at that specific time. The overlap of the Losties previous lives is more plausibly explained as coincidence - especially now that we seem to be toying with Eternity, Fate & all the metaphysical concepts on the show.

Yes it got to be coincidence - not everything can be explained plausible. And why not? I mean I met ppl in Mallorca on holiday actually living next door to me at home and we said: "what a small village this world can be." I think there is a saying like that in every language.
