wow, that was dumb...
Rewatched the (last) episode of lost last night... and recalled something. Locke is trying to fit under the door suspended by the toolbox and tells Henry to climb through the pantry after the door falls on his legs. Why did they not both - or simply Locke - go out that way to begin with?

However, does the area with the button have access to the outside world?

yea i am also wondering why he didnt just go that way. No i dont believe that the button room has acess to the out by the layout of the room that we see after the doors go up. But lock DID know that he had to press the button, right?? i mean the button would be my first priority before going to get the others. Im not sure but i thought that lock looked at the timer and it was stuck at 47 minutes or something. Maybe thats why he didnt go there first because he thought he still had a lot of time. But i still would have locked up "gale" and went up there. But i guess all its purpose is to draw us into this new map that we saw. I dont know...thoughts??

Why not the vents..
Because then he wouldn't have found the map, of course. Besides, things were happening so fast, he was just reacting to the immediate need to push the button.
Here's the real question...what happened to the roll-around that Kelvin and Desmond used to slide under the blast door?
