Default War - train an army

Okay, if you're in the UK this is almost deffinately a spoiler, so be warned....

---

Anyway, at the end of last weeks ABC's lost episode, Jack walks up to Ana after loosing Michael and the confrontation with "The Others" and says something like "can I ask you a question? How long would it take to train an army?"

So during this episode they gave something away - not sure what - but forshadowed this, because I remember thinking "they're going to start a war".

So basically, I suspect that the Lost surivors are going to start training - both physically and with weapons - and they're going to go out against the others in a revolution, war-like scenario. There'll be a lot of death. I'm not sure how soon this will happen, but I think it's inevitable.

ive thought that is is possible before, the survivours have been attacked by the others, the took claire, tried to kill charlie and have now took walt its only a matter of time that they start to retaliate, its natural for them to want to protect themselves and the only way is to train an army and get weapons to save themselves from the others before everyone gets killed

I think that Jack will run into some opposition once he starts talking all this army stuff to someone other that Anna Lucia. Especially Locke, Sayid and Eko. Hopefully they will be able to convince him that the others have many advantages and no matter how long or hard they train they will not be able to fight them. At least not with war tactics.

You're probably right, at least with Locke and probably Eko. I'm not sure about Sayid though. I think he'll probably support Jack on this one.

Also - welcome to the site steve. And if you'd like, you can put the link in your signature rather than every post.

I think the characters are right for a war. The runaway: Kate, The hunter: Locke, The medic and leader: Jack, The big bad ass tough guy: Eko, the techie: Sayid, etc. It makes sense

That's a good point. But I think Sayid is more reasonable than Jack at this point. I think that's why he went to A-L instead. He knew Sayid would try to reason with him.

The others have the home field advantage. They clearly have combat skills and are good with weapons. They seem to be strong. And we have no idea how many of them there are. I think we can assume there are more than the 13 or so we saw with torches. I'm not sure what training Jack thinks will give them the ability to battle this enemy.

It just seems like a bad idea. And it has added to my growing disdain for Dr. Shepherd.

Default Lost & Political Theory?

The people on the island live in a state of nature with no mechanism for rule. The others constitute a real threat and have created a border. Especially now that Charlie needs to be locked up, the survivors must create a system of administration.

Jack seems to feel that everyone looks to him to be the leader. I see him, with the help of Anna-Lucia creating that administration where he is sort of a benevolent dictator.

John Locke (keeping with his namesake) will see the need for that but will want less ability of the group to control the behavior of the individual. We've seen this when Jack wanted to go after Michael but Locke said something like, "what right do we have to tell him he can't do something" Locke said something similar when Jack was trying to stop him from opening the hatch. "don't ever tell me what I can't do" (I know he probably was thinking about his former diability). That scene also showed jack trying to enlist Kate to back him up in controling Locke "I think we're going to have a Locke problem".

...mostly projecting from the political philosopher John Locke to this John locke...I mean, what we have here is a state of nature. To survive and not end up killing eachother, they have to ceede their individual rights to the group so that someone can take responsibility for and punish/imprison people like Sawyer and Charlie AND protect them from the OTHERS. It will be Jack/Anna but Locke will insist on some sorts of limits and checks -accountability to the group.

How will Rosseau play into all this? My political philosophy crystal ball is unclear...any thoughts? Complain about the inequality of the system? Decry the corrupting influence of the group and try to get Sayyid to run away with her? Hmm.....

In otherwords, a primitive, makeshift "government".
