It's primarily classified as scifi.
See, your generalization (here we go again) of SciFi is what gives women the perception that the genre was strictly created for mere nerds. Every single woman (over 2 dozen) - except 2 that just didn't care - I've dated have perceived my penchant for Fantasy/SciFi to be unattractive or childish. One of my profound memories is when I was approaching a very beautiful women of 25. She was always reading books so I knew she had to be on the bright side. Once I revealed to her that I enjoyed SciFi, she told me she wasn't into humans giving birth to aliens. I tried to explain but she simply brushed me off. It was over before I knew it.
You argue that SciFi is not for nerds, yet you contradict yourself by implying Lost - a scifi TV series - is not the "traditional SciFi." It's as if you're subconsciously concealing the fact that you're enjoying a scifi series. Instead you try and find different genres to label it. There are scifi/fantasy films (Gattaca, Lord of the Rings, Serenity, X-Men, Batman Begins, etc) and TV shows (Angel, Buffy, Firefly, Battlestar, etc) that involve mystery, action, drama, relationship exploration, etc. But the general perception, especially in women, is if a show is good, it can't be SciFi. And once you tell them it is, they either quit watching it or say something to the effect of, "Well this is different... " Sure, there are crappy SciFi shows, but don't pigeonhole the genre. Sadly, I've tried to make the same argument with many a women, but they just brush it off like I've got an issue and they move on with their shopping spree, celebrity gossip and MTV"s Laguna Beach. I understand that there are a very few women who do enjoy and appreciate SciFi, and bless their souls for it, but I'm speaking generally.
