A little story I thought of earlier. The characters are:
Ian Nabru Emily Nabru Dr. Henry Maverick Carrie Lindor Dr. Haley Giorden Here is a little prologue to wet your appetite. ((Setting: A hospital in Grand Junction, CO. Year: 1985)) "Will he be okay?" asked the woman, staring at the window. "I do believe so, he is actually doing better than any of us thought." a man walked up to her and put his hand on her shoulder. "I'm Dr. Henry Maverick, the one who helped your friend." he held out his hand. "I'm, well, I guess you know." she took his hand and shook it. "Yes, you're Emily. How are you anyway? He must have given you a scare. He sure scared us. I've never, in my 25 years of being a doctor in these parts, seen such a severe case of altitude sickness." Emily started to panic: "It's that bad?" "No, I'm sorry if I made it sound that way. He'll be up and out of here soon. You can even go in and see him now. I'll be back in a second with the woman who helped me so he can tell you what went wrong." Maverick then opened the door to let Emily in and walked away. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Ian? Are you okay?" she walked up to the side of the bed and put her hand on the arm of the man lying in the bed. "Maybe" he answered with a hint of humor in his crackling voice. "Now I Am." he smiled as she sat down. "Good, I was worried about you earlier. You were completely passed out, Dr. Maverick said it was so bad, you died for 5 minutes." she tried to hold back the tears. "I thought I saw the light, then I backed up. I'm glad i did." he smiled even bigger. "Oh, by the way, my sister is here to see you." "Carrie? Oh no..." "What?" "You know what she'll do to me. She always crushes me with those rib-crunching hugs your family is so famous for." "I'll try to hold her back. Here," she pulls a square thing out of her backpack "I picked this up at the store. It's a get well present." As Emily gave him the gift, Carrie burst into the door. A muffled voice could be heard outside the door: "Dang it Emily, the door's locked." she said as she rattled the doorknob. "I wonder why." muttered Ian. "Shhhh..." said Emily as she went to open the door. "Oh my gosh!!! Ian! You look horrible!!" Carrie went to hug him but was stopped by Emily. "Not today little sis. He isn't feeling good. Come, sit down." she led Carrie to a chair as Dr. Maverick and his partner walked in. "Hello ladies...gentleman. This is Dr. Haley Giorden, my partner. Se is here to tell us why Ian is so sick." "I'm no expert, but I think that he has been exposed to a deadly sickness caused by high altitude. Now, before you panic," she said, looking at Emily, "he drew the long straw. Nothing is wrong, but we'll have to get him to a hospital in Denver. The low altitude will help him recover. The ambulance is ready to go right now." "Come now, all aboard." Dr. Maverick ushered Carrie, Emily and Dr. Giorden out while the paramedics got Ian ready to be brought to Denver.

(10 years later. An apartment, in Charleston, SC)
"Are you still going on about Ian? That was 10 years ago." said Haley. "Yes, but I have good reason to. You see, the x-rays on his lungs didn't show any signs of altitude poisoning. So I don't think he was at any altitude at all." Maverick added without much enthusiasm. "And your point is..." "It just doesn't make sense!" Maverick shouted in frustration, after looking in his 4th book. "No one know what the heck he had, yet we got him almost completely healed." "Almost is the key word, we had to operate on him, remember? And it almost went horribly wrong." after seeing Maverick's anguished look, Haley quickly added, "Don't kill yourself over it, he may have been born with a complication." "Yes, I thought about genetics, but how do we know for sure? Or better yet, why do we even care? They are responsible adults now. It ma have been something that they did all those years ago. They were only 16 back then you know." "I do know. I'm sure it was just dehydration and altitude sickness. That's even what you told Emily all those years back. 'I've never, in my 25 years of being a doctor in these parts, seen such a severe case of altitude sickness.' She panicked." Maverick lit a cigar, blew a puff, and resumed speaking. "You remember that his case was extremely rare. His was only the third case EVER to be recorded, and the other two were found in animals that dwell in the high altitudes of the Himalayas." "HA!!! High altitude. It must be a severe case of altitude sickness." "Possibly, I just heard about that yesterday. We need to find out if Ian or Emily have been in that region in the past. I'll call them now." As he rose to get the phone, Haley held him down. "Is it any of our business? He came to the ER 10 years ago, he is healed." "Yes, but we could be on the verge of a medical breakthrough." He broke loose of Haley's strong grip and dialed the Nabru's number. "Hello, is this the Nabru home? Oh good, this is Dr. Henry Maverick...yes the doctor that treated Ian all those years ago. May I speak to him? Thanks." He paused, "Hello, remember that day, all those years ago when you came to my ER, and the complication you had? Well, I may have more info on it..."
