"The Last Man on Earth," a 1964 spaghetti sci-fi starring Vincent Price, could have a connection to Lost and the mysterious "disease" on the island.
Movie/book spoilers ahead.
"The Last Man on Earth" is based off of the novel I Am Legend by Richard Matheson (another possible literary connection?). In the book and movie, the world is overrun by a "vampire" disease. It is an airborne virus that gives its victims the symptoms of vampires - sensitivity to light, allergy to garlic, inability to see one's refelction, etc. They are more like zombie vampires really.
The main character - the last man on earth, so he thinks - spends his days burning the corpses of the zombie vampires and protecting his house. At night, they come to attack him. As for relation to Lost, this part is still questionable considering that we know hardly anything about Desmond or the sickness. What is very possibly a connection is this:
The main character encounters "others" (he even calls them that!) that are "alive," in the loosest sense of the word. They are infected with the virus, but they developed a medicine that they inject into themselves that keeps them from becoming zombie vampires. This could possibly be a connection to whatever it was the Desmond injected into his arm in the first episode of season two. Is Desmond sick? Does that medicine prevent him from being affected by whatever symptoms there may be? (Recall the "QUARANTINED" label on the inside of the hatch door!)
If this really is a connection, then are the Others on the island sick, but in possession of a medicine to prevent them from becoming something else?
We all know that the writers love to throw in references to obscure books and movies. I wouldn't be surprised if they got some ideas from here.
