I am just throwing this theory out there but I think the numbers have to do with the 6 dharma stations and the number of people at each station. The lady, Abby I think her name was, who was with Michael, Sawyer and Jin said that they had 23 people at one point. I think they were 42 at the main station. So at each station it will follow the numbers 42, 23, 16, 15, 8, 4. Just my thoughts on what the numbers mean.
