The fate of some Lost characters will hang in the balance after Wednesday's season finale (8 ET/PT), a producer says.
Although executive producer Damon Lindelof won't say whether any characters die, he says viewers will learn about some characters' fates: "We'll know just by virtue of what happens (that) it's highly unlikely for some people to be returning next season."
Lost's producers have shown that they mean what they say about the dangerous, mysterious island, which earlier claimed the life of Boone (Ian Somerhalder), one of 14 cast regulars.
The finale might have enough drama without a major death. The plane-crash survivors face myriad challenges. Some will try to open the mysterious sealed hatch, while others are on a raft, looking for rescuers but finding surprises. And Claire's baby will be in peril.
Lost's writers hope to continue to answer enough questions to satisfy viewers while offering new puzzles to keep them intrigued. That delicate balance has made the freshman drama a top 15 hit, averaging 15.7 million viewers.
Though some characters could be gone next season, new ones could be introduced. More than 40 passengers survived Oceanic Flight 815's crash, and others have been discovered living on the island.
"The first year has been about getting to know our main people. The second season is a lot more about exploring the island and going deeper," Lindelof says.
