there are a lot of theories out there that talk about the philosophical links to the show, and you're right, the writers do have a lot of interest in it
there are other names in the show that have links to philosophers as well (i forget what they are), and a whole lot of symbolism. however it's impossible to know how much we can read into it... they may have picked the name merely as a tribute to the real person, or there may be a deeper reason...here is a good place to read up on some of the bigger theories: http://lost-forum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=161 some of these people have put an impressive amount of thought and research into their theories, and even the ones that are now discredited are still an interesting read ![]() |

thnx that was an interesting read.
i thought it was just a name as a tribute to the original person until i read the line about his ultimate faith in god which made me think it was something deeper with Lockes faith in the island and everything |

you're probably right, i don't know anything about the real john locke, but the character is definitely the "spirit guide" of the island... i'm starting to think locke will have a grander purpose to the whole thing, the others certainly seem interested in him, and he has some kind of connection to the island

if he was cured, he would be able to feel his legs right? maybe there's something on the island that can make EVERYONE'S thoughts come true... locke wanted to walk, he walked, but as soon as his faith started faltering he couldn't walk so well... kate's horse... jack's father, he wanted closure...or maybe something is making locke walk... some "higher power" needs locke to do things and is making him walk somehow... some of the theories that are based on electromagnetism have mentioned that in one of locke's flashbacks you see he has a machine who's purpose is to stimulate the muscles in his legs because he didn't use them... which means he had metal bits all through his legs, which means something/someone might be manipulating them (with electromagnetism) to help him walk or something... seems a little flaky but who knows with this show ![]() |

yeah makes sence, although its been 2 years since i studied physics n electromagnetism so iv forgot most of it and i didnt understand much of it when i did it lol so i dont no if that would be possible or not but it does sound plausable. although i didnt think when u had magnetism put through u 2 stimulate ur muscles it involved any metal being put in. i think it uses the bodies natural current or something but i might be wrong

noone seemed to refute those things so i assumed they're probably at least possible |

yeah well my only problem with that theory was that i dont think people have to av metal in their legs to have used magnetism to stimulate the muscles because i think it uses the bodys natural charge. mind you i am only guessing because people wear those copper bracelets that are supposed 2 enhance the bodys natural magnetism and stimulate muscles |
