My comments:
-Sawyer is better as woodcutter than James as supplanter -Kate scoff...does that mean that's not her real name? lol -Jack, Michael wish I could find other meanings sides biblical ones but that's all that came up I think some of them are on target and can be related to the character like Locke but then... we'll see |

From an article by Matthew Gilbert of the Boston Globe
On TV, naming characters can be a fine art, one extending far beyond the obviousness of Marcus Welby, the doctor whose patients would inevitably be well, and Dr. James Kildare, who dares illness to kill those in his care. For TV creators, christening TV's fictional creations can be a rich business, leading to the suggestive likes of Paulie Walnuts, Chandler Bing, Vic Mackey, Herman Munster or Veronica Mars, who lives in a town called Neptune... ...The name game is something the makers of "Lost" have played quite shrewdly. J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof have been deliberate and provocative in their choices, using names that gesture outward from the series. "Every single name on the show has purpose and meaning," Lindelof has said. The most conspicuous is John Locke, a character named after the 17th century philosopher who believed humans are born in a state of "tabula rasa," a phrase meaning "blank slate" that also served as the title of a "Lost" episode. The show's Locke (Terry O'Quinn) was "reborn" after the plane crash and returned to his original, unparalyzed state. Jack (Matthew Fox) is the de facto leader of the island's society, thus his appropriate surname is Shephard - a pun on one who tends to the flock, with a passing nod to space pioneer Alan Shepard. Other "Lost" characters have namesakes redolent of early Americana - Boone, Walt and Sawyer, for example. |

I looked up the name Desmond after the episode and I found 3 different meanings that kept popping up.
1. Gracious protector: Anglo Saxon orgin 2. Man of the world, society: Celtic, latin orgin 3. From South Munster: Irish orgin I thought that was interesting that it had three very different meanings. So maybe Desmond has a very complex character and personality. I cant really remember for sure, but does anyone remember if Desmond had an Irish accent? I know he had one, but I dont remember what country.
