Michael wasnt gonna sail back to the USA, Ben said that if he followed the heading he would find rescue. Which I doubt coz I dont think Ben would want anyone to find their way back to the island.

he might find rescue there.. i think that the others have someway of knowing whats sailing around in the sea nearby or what land they are near, however finding the island i do not think is that easy. he wont be able to get back if he got out of the forcefield type thing

Well if they are around Hawaii (where they are in real life) and the pacific ocean is veeeeeeeery big than it is very far to every destination: USA, Fidji and all the little islands there. I think there might be still islands that are uncovered yet!
