LOST ? Episode 10
?We?re Not Alone?

This weeks column is going to be shorter I think because my VCR didn?t work so I have no way to go back and check my facts. I?m sure you will probably leave me a note if I got it wrong? so here goes.

I guess I?d have to say that this episode was very spooky and maybe the spookiest so far. I mean we were into a psychic who knew something was going to happen (the plane crash) and who enticed?inveigled?doing whatever it took to get Claire on the Oceanic Flight 815 with everyone else.

Obviously, it was Claire?s turn in this episode. We see her with her boyfriend when she finds out via the pee-test that she is pregnant, at least six weeks so. The boyfriend tells her he?s willing to see her through the pregnancy?that he wants the baby, after all, he loves her. A couple of days after the proof positive test, Claire go with a friend to see a psychic. He sees something in her hands and tells her to leave after giving her money back.

Three months later, the boyfriend backs out. He leaves her high and dry. She goes back to the psychic who tells her without her saying so that her boyfriend left her. She knows he?s the real deal. She asks him why he didn?t complete the other reading and he says because things were ?blurry.? She gives him money to complete the reading. He reacts strangely by telling her that she and only she must raise her baby; she is good, kind, and the right person to do the job. She tells him she planned to give the baby up and leaves.
However, the psychic keeps calling her, telling her should not give the baby up: that she and only she is the one to raise the boy.

Claire arranges to give the baby up and still cannot go through with it. She calls the psychic who tells her she will get six thousand to fly to L.A. and six thousand after she arrives. She must leave, however, the next day on Oceanic Airline?s Flight 815. Of course, we all know what happened. So what made the psychic insist? It may have been because he ?knew? the crash would happen and that she would then be the only one to raise the baby.

Now to the present: Claire has two nightmares. The first one wakes her and she chases through the jungle after what looks like a child running. She meets Locke who says in accusatory tones, ?You gave him away.? She finally comes to a child?s bed trying to find him under the covers. At that moment, her screams wake the cave group. When Jack shakes her awake, she has been so terrified that in clenching her fists, her nail dug deep enough to bring blood.

Her second nightmare comes the next night when someone with a long knife/needle puts his/her hand over Claire?s mouth. She pushes it away and screams repeatedly wakes up the camp.
Back to the rest of the not so happy campers: Hurley wants to do a census on all those who are left alive. He wants the manifest and the only one who might have it is Sawyer. He tells Sawyer he needs brownie points so it would be a good idea to give him the manifest, which he does.

Charlie tells Claire that he could be her friend. She tells him no. That is soon to change.

Kate wants to know why Jack came to the beach. He shrugs saying he brought water and will take back fish. Kate is worried about Sayid who has now been gone a week. Jack tells her not to worry. He says that Claire has been having dreams and that the baby is about ready to come.

Back at the caves, Jack tells Claire it would be a good idea if she took a sedative to calm herself down. He?s worried that there might be problems when the baby comes. Claire is incensed and packs up, heading for the beach. Charlie goes after her. Half way there, she goes into labor. She wants Jack and Charlie races back up the trail to get him. Half way there, he runs into Ethan Rom, who says he will go get him. Charlie runs back to Claire who seems to be feeling all right. False pregnancy? Possibly, but before they can go anywhere, Ethan comes back in a rather menacing way. Oh oh!

Hurley, who tells us that his real name is Hugo Reyes, has been taking stock of the survivors of the crash. He finds Jack to tell him that there is one person who was not on the manifest?Ethan Rom.

Meanwhile we see Sayid running, stumbling through the jungle. Sayid is in bad shape. Jack and Kate find him. He gasps out that he found the Frenchwoman still alive and what?s more, ?We?re not alone.?

COMMENTS AND DISCUSSION

Recapping our Lost group?s problems.

There are polar (?) bears on the island.
Weird sounds emanate from the jungle on occasion.
The pilot was pulled from the cockpit by a monster (?) which the Frenchwoman, Danielle Rousseau, says there are none.
Two dead corpses are found in the cave.
A psychic insists Claire raise her baby herself and sent her on Flight 815 after reading her palms.
Kate was in handcuffs on the plane, but for what reason.
What put Locke into a wheelchair? Disease or injury?
Two people are dead-the lawman with Kate and the woman swimmer. Are there more to come soon?
Why was Jack in trouble? Something go wrong with surgery he performed?
Was Jin a hit man for Sun?s father?

Someone not on the manifest is moving among the survivors?his name, Ethan Rom. Who is he and where did he come from?the island itself or from the plane? (I?m sure the former.)

A lot of questions need answering.
