Danielle was part of a scientific research team. They got stuck on the island. After the two people with her became "infected" by something, she killed both of them to save them.
Sayid used to be a member of the Republican guard. While interrogating a prisoner, he realized said prisoner was a childhood friend. When the time to kill her came because she wouldn't give any information, he couldn't bring himself to kill her, so he helped her escape and hasn't seen her since.
