LOST ? Episode 8
?Do You Want To Die??

This show gets more intriguing every Wednesday. Of course, we still don?t know Kate?s entire story, but this week it?s Sawyer?s turn. It?s one for a psychologist and a psychiatrist all rolled into one. And we see a three more people move back to the caves. Two go for health reasons and another for peanut butter.

So let?s tackle our character of the week?all in one sequence.

His first scene opens at the beach where he is bathing. Kate comes across his clothes and book. She sees him and he comes out of the water, I think, in his birthday suit. Of course, he makes a pass at Kate, who turns away. So now, we know who?s the lynchpin in this episode. Our next view of him is he with a blonde and it?s obvious they?ve just had sex. She reminds him he has an appointment. He says it?s not until three and she says it?s two fifty eight. He dashes out of bed, dresses, and pulls his briefcase up. It opens and a lot of cash spills out.

?You weren?t supposed to see that,? he says. (Shades of the last words spoken in Season Three of Alias).

Now the scene shifts back to the jungle. He turns around to hear something and then starts running. He comes up to his digs and sees Boone going through his stuff. He?s beats the ?stuffing? out of the kid. His sister brings him to the cave, gasping herself, to have Jack treat him. It is then that Boone tells Jack he was just looking for his sister?s inhalers as she has severe asthma. Since Boone found his book, he assumes he also found the inhalers that he packed into the same bag. Jack confronts Sawyer and they almost come to blows, but Kate interrupts and the situation slows for the moment.

As Kate and Jack move off, Sawyer relives more of his past. He was involved in an oil platform scheme and it isn?t long before we suspect we are looking at a con man doing a job on the blonde, Jessica, and her husband, David. He needs another one hundred sixty grand to seal the deal. He supposedly was going to meet the other investor. Jessica wants her husband to invest and they meet for lunch. Sawyer cons them good and the husband falls for it just like his wife. The next day, Sawyer meets with an African-American in a seedy bar. It seems the money Sawyer flashed was his money. He expects Sawyer to have it and half the profits in his hands the next day. He goes to the victim?s home to pick up the money. He is about to leave with it when their son enters the room, a seven year old. Sawyer looks like he has seen a ghost. He leaves without any of the money. I think he was on the plane because he is on the run.

So, that basically that is his story. Meanwhile back at the beach, Kate comes to him and asks him to give her the inhalers. Shannon has asthma and needs them to survive. Sawyer says he will give them to her?the price is a kiss from her.

?Nobody?s that disgusting,? she says. She further tells him there is always good in everyone and that she knows he must have because he keeps reading a letter. Sawyer gives her the letter, insisting she read it. In the letter, someone unidentified tells Sawyer ?I know you had sex with my mother and when my father found out, my father killed my mother, then killed himself. You killed my parents. I?m going to find you and give you this note, to tell you what you did.? Kate stares at him and turns away without saying anymore.

There?s a small sub-story here. Charlie has come to the beach. He wants Claire to move back to the caves because that will put her close to the doctor. She tells him that she isn?t moving because she wants to be rescued. However, in the course of the conversation, Charlie learns that she is simply mad for peanut butter. He elicits a promise that if he gets her some, she will move back to the caves. She agrees. Charlie goes back and find?s Hurley on his way with a bag full of supplies. He asks him for peanut butter. Hurley has none. Charlie almost gets into bigger trouble because ?It?s been two weeks and you don?t look any different.? He is alluding of course to Hurley?s size. The big man is offended and finally Charlie, who is probably out-weighed by two hundred pounds, gives in and goes back with him, hoping to find peanut butter.

Shannon is having a real asthma attack. Without any meds, she is likely to be in bad shape in a big hurry. Jack is working hard to keep her from panicking. He gets her to breathe through her nose, decreasing the attack. He tells Boone that he has to stay with her and keep her stable. In another part of the camp, Sun comes upon Michael and asks him to do something for her. ?I think I can help her,? she whispers. Later Michael brings her some leaves on a branch. Jin catches them and is upset. Michael warns him to be careful not to assume anything.

Sayid comes upon Locke and wants to know if he hit him. Locke says he was skinning a boar and cooking it. Locke suggests Sawyer, but Sayid says he was setting off one of the rockets. Locke says that anyone can set a delayed fuse?with a cigarette. He gives Sayid one of his knives for protection. Sayid goes to Jack and tells him that part of his training in the Republican Guard was helping people communicate. They go back to the beach. Sawyer is asleep. Jack knocks him out and when he regains consciousness, he?s tied to some bamboo. Jack wants the inhalers and if he doesn?t get them, he?ll let Sayid practice some communication extraction. He refuses and is tortured, screaming. Jack wants to know what it will take. Sawyer says a kiss from Kate. (Oh, kiss me Kate!)

Kate walks in to find Sawyer still bound. The other two men leave. She kneels in front of Sawyer and kisses him. (Some kiss, by the way) When she breaks away, she wants to know where the inhalers are. He tells her he doesn?t have them that the book belonging to Boone, washed up on the beach. Kate, Jack, and Sayid have been conned. Sawyer loosened his bonds and when Sayid walks up angrily they fight, but Sawyer ends up with the knife in his arm, which severed the artery. Jack tells Sayid to get his bag back at the camp. Turning back to Sawyer, he holds onto the tourniquet to keep the artery from bleeding as little as possible.

Later, Kate finds Sawyer back in his digs. He has just regained consciousness and finds a bandage around his arm. ?You want to be hated,? she accuses him. She shows him the note in the envelope and tells him that he wrote it. Now he reveals the final note to his story. He was the little boy in the story and vowed that someday he would find the man who did this to his family. But hunting this hated man, he metamorphosed into Sawyer, the con man. He tells Kate to get out and leave him alone.
In the final act, we get the payoff of all the little stories. Charlie is a bit of a con man himself as he comes to Claire with an empty jar and proceeds to tell her there is extra creamy peanut butter in it and mime?s the entire process?eating it. Claire is so enchanted that she leaves the beach with him. Jack comes upon Sun who is rubbing paste onto Shannon?s chest. She made the paste from the eucalyptus leaves Michael found. He thanks Sun for doing it and Jin watches with what I thought was a look of approval. Back at the beach, Sayid has packed a bag. He tells Kate he is going to walk around the island to see how big it is?that he was ashamed of what he did to Sawyer. He had lost control of something he was trying to forget. He needed to be alone. Kate is not happy to see him go.

And Sawyer sits in his shelter with a cigarette lighter in one hand and the letter in another. He is trying to burn it, but doesn?t.

COMMENT:
We didn?t see Locke work his ?island magic? this week, but it worked without him. Sun came up with the answer for Shannon?s asthma. I find it interesting that an eucalyptus tree shows up on this island, especially since it?s off the beaten track and no one knows about it.

DISCUSS:
What do you think Sayid will find on his journey? (Oh, I know we saw the preview for next week) Do you think his story is going to be featured?

Will Charlie pair up with Claire?

When will Claire have the baby?

What?s going to happen to Kate? Sayid is gone. Jack is in a cave. That leaves Sawyer who is a bitter unhappy son of a b*itch. That kiss was pretty hot.
