So, when Hurley & Charlie were rollin' down hill, he muttered to himself that there was no curse and then turned the engine and it worked.
So, do you think the curse is broken?

I don't know if there is a curse.... everyone keeps telling Hurley there isn't. I don't think Charlie died because this was not one of the next times he was supposed to die. Desmond would probably have coming running out of the jungle like a madman and stopped the car with superman-like strength if charlie was actually in danger. After all, he thinks/knows charlie will die, but that doesn't mean he will stop trying to save him.
I think getting that car going was basically closure for him with his father. He was supposed to get that car running with his father when he got back, to fix their relationship. But he never came back from Australia, so fixing that car on the island was his way of fixing his past with his father and getting closure.

Maybe it was just hurley realising there was no curse. Hurley blames himself for the plane crashing and he blames the numbers for all the bad stuff thats happened to him over the years, so hurley saying there is no curse is him realising that none of what happened was his fault and so now hurley is over his inner demons

There has to be a curse - the Tricia Tanaka (played by Sung Hi Lee - famous Korean nudey model - dont ask me how I know that) incident is testament to it. I mean, come on. A meteor?! This plus his grandad, his mom, the burning house?
But here's how I see it: this episode is about hope. Even when the chips are way, way, waaaay down; hope is the only thing that will carry you through. Even though everything is so crappy on toast on Craphole island, there has to be a ray of sunshine in there somewhere. And it is Hard Luck Hurley. The VW coming to life and swerving the intrepid duo of doom from being dashed on the rocks in a fiery apocalypse shows you that it can't be all bad luck. Sure you may have a curse on you, but you CAN beat it. Nothing is predestined. There may be a 99% chance of death at the jaws of a disgruntled polar bear but there will always be that 1%, that slim chance that things may work out in the end. And the way Desmundo's vision works probably is that he suddenly sees Charlie being struck by lightning, so he sets up a rod to deflect it. He suddenly sees Charlie drowning in the sea trying to save Claire. So he jumps in the ocean before our hobbit friend and eliminates the cause by saving her himself. That's why he cant tell Charlie how it's gonna happen, he doesn't know yet. He only seems to see it happen a little while before it actually happens. In a way, Charlie is lucky coz he suddenly has a guardian angel who can predict danger for him. |

Here's a thought.
I don't think the Van rolling down the hill counts as breaking the curse for Hurly or Charlie. If you remember, in the first season, Hurly came to a realization that he couldn't die. People around him always die, but nothing ever happens to him. That's why he wanted to hold the dynamite so bad...he knew it wouldn't blow up if he was holding it. He also decided to cross that old rope bridge first because he knew it wouldn't break with him on it. (Then it broke when Charlie crossed) Of course, Hurly only held on to this attitude for a little while and there was never any explanation as to why he stopped thinking he was immortal. Anyway, if Hurly can't die....there was no way that the van was going to crash and if Charlie was in the van with Hurly then he was relatively safe. eh...just a thought. Sybin |

Oh yeah....I was confusing myself.
I remember thinking that was strange when Hurly didn't want to hold the dynamite because shortly before that, he was acting like he couldn't die. That was the first time I wondered, "why is Hurly afraid...he can't die". Thanks for pointing that out...I had forgot. |
