At first I thought the smoke was just some kind of experiment that had gone wrong by the Dharma Initiative but now that , that it appears to everyone in a different shape makes sense to me. Thank you!

It may still well be tho. It could have happened as an accident which caused the project to be abandoned. Maybe that's why the Others retreated to a separate island, to get away from Smokie.

here's a thought. What if The Flame controls the Smoke? (ok, ok, dumb joke.) but seriously?
Wasn't there some kind of phsycological experiment on the island? Could the smoke monster be that experiement? WE have seen smokey apparently scan ecko's past, and, i believe, take on different forms for all the losties, related to their pasts and their guilt. So what if that is all part of the physcological experiment? What if patchy was in the Flame, the headquarters for smokey. Patchy saw the Locke, Sayid and Co. in the Pearl, did he not? Could this possibly relate to why the smoke would, in the words of ecko, be coming for those specific people next? ok, so yea, its probably totally off, but it's interesting to think about. I muh prefer my smoke is the hallucinations theory.

Yeah, now that you mention it... If halucinations of Yemi are part of Smokie's doing, why did it lead Eko and Locke to the Pearl?
Here's a bit of stretchy theo-retification: maybe Smokie has gained some sort of sentience and wants to be free from whatever controls locks it in place around the island. it lead Eko and Locke to the Pearl hoping that they could use the monitors to locate Patchy (Smokie's keeper) and hopefully dispatch of him. About the Incident at the Black Rock, maybe Smokie's base of operations ( Flame Station?) is nearby... Yes. Ok. It is rather stretchy. And a little pungent.
