I think they put Kate and Sawyer to realize they're in love and whatnot, as mentioned. Not sure why. Their work is sort of busy work. Not sure the point.
Jack has a purpose... they others have a goal with him, though I haven't the slightest idea what. |

They're conditioning Sawyer and Kate like you would and animal: simple tasks must be learned to get a reward (food). When they're bad, they get shocked, just like a dog's training collar. They know putting Sawyer and Kate together will give them better leverage when they decide to pull them apart (or threaten Kate to make Sawyer behave).
