SO, here it is (posted Below). Ecko could be a preacher, or religious figure. I got the impression from Locke (in Last week's episode about Kate) that Locke wasn't so much a believer in a Christian God as he is in Fate. I site his look to Ecko as an example when Ecko tells him the story of the book that was found.

If Ecko is a religious figure it explains why he did not speak for 40+ days following the killing. Guilt, fear, or in respect for those he had taken. Also perhaps a reference to Christ's time in the desert.

And two "The Numbers" references. 23 and 42. I cannot remember but perhaps Ecko was silent for 42 days. And, obviously, 23rd Psalm.

Finally. If you read the 23rd Psalm as a survivor of Flight 815 it looks as though it is speaking about them. It seems to me that everyone is seeking peace. And that this island is a place of peace. The survivors have certainly been provided for even though there is always danger. After the crash they were laid down without harm.
The garden of Eden?

23RD PSALM
A Psalm of David. the Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul; He guideth me in straight paths for His name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; Thou hast anointed my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

Is that all you have to say, Eko? Your only post, is to correct someone?

TinLantern, pretty cool stuff there. Perhaps you can find this verse in a translation that more resembles today's english. "The Message" perhaps.

Sorry if the spelling error offends. I've only seen it spelled "Ecko."

In any case, we'll be waiting a while for the episode. Any other ideas in the meantime?

When I looked up translations of the verse there are a billion. One of the most intersting ones though was a literal translation. Since David was a shepard and this was supposedly written by David, it is all a metephor for his faith as it applies to what he knows as a sheep herder. Weird.

It had a lot to do with his sheep becoming LOST and it was his charge to protect them, expecially from a strange wilderness that included vipers and poisoned plants.

The whole annointing the head with oil comes directly from putting oil on sheep's wounds to heal them. And also around their nose to protect from insects getting inside. Since sheep cannot flick insects away with a tail they tend to beat their head on a rock until they die. So the oil is essentially a protection.

All of the LOST survivors (with perhaps Rose as an exception) beat themselves up constantly over thier torments.

So, now we have through Ecko (Eko) Dharma AND Christianity. Another duality. Both are supposed "Paths" to righteousness. If you believe.

Yeh I believe that Eko is a religious man and he took 40 days silence because I think it's 20 days for each person you kill. And it doesn't matter if you spell his name wrong(I always say it wrong). And that sheepard thing is cool.

SPOILER WARNING!!!

I found a blown up pic from 23rd Psalm where you can really see Eko's stick. It has some odd stuff carved into it. More Bible verses and such. Check it out. He seems to be confronting Charlie about the heroin. I wonder if Eko will start to replace Locke as the island's mystic. Perhaps phasing Locke out entirely, he seems to be more direct and involved whereas Locke sort of sticks to the background and tends to lend subtle direction.

Anyway, here's the pic:
