What's with the countdown?

ok so yah, watched the last episode "adrift" and the number thing was really interesting. i think that the island is under quarantine cuz some sort of scientific experiment went all wrong, and desmond's only escape was to get in the hatch and stay there. the countdown is the only way desmond can communicate to some sort of gov't or hierarchy to tell them that someone is still alive on the island. wut r your thoughts.

Could be a failsafe incase the 'sickness' has been leeched into the Hatch. If everyone inside is incapacitated, it is rigged to explode should they not reset in time.

Is it 108 minutes, 1 hour, 8 minutes, or 108 hours? Because the first two would suck if you were trying to sleep.

My guess is 108 minutes. You can see Desmond is a little cracked.You remember Desmond entered the code before the hatch being blown up & later that night, Locke had to enter it. It can't be 108 hours.

Maybe it's a countdown to when he needs to take his medicine.

I think it has to do with the island. And/or the others.
