LOST ? Episode 22
Born To Run ?It?s not fair?you coming back home.? This week we learn more about Kate, but not enough. We do hear that her real last name is Austin. Then we learn who the pilot was, including the circumstances surrounding his death. As always, we will tell the centric character first?Kate. We first see a blond Kate driving up to a motel where she promptly alights and changes the license plates on her car. A couple leaves their room and takes off. A maid walks down the outside, preparing to clean the room next to the one just vacated. Kate walks past the cleaning woman?s mobile cart, lifts a towel, some soap, and enters the empty room, shutting the door after putting on a Do Not Disturb sign. Inside she treats her hair with something and takes a shower. She emerges with her dark hair, as we know it. She goes to a post-office in the town and asks if there is a letter for her?Joan Hart. When she reads it, she cries. Kate drives to an unknown city somewhere in the Midwest (Kansas) and enters a hospital carrying flowers. She is looking for one particular person, Diane Jensen, who turns out to be her mother. She is dying of cancer. As she walks down the hall, we see a policeman sitting on a chair in front of her mother?s room. Not hesitating, she walks past him. A young man in scrubs hurries to his car and upon entering finds Kate in the backseat. He is a friend of her younger days, Tom Brennan. He drives her home and they talk about his wife and young son, Conner. She wants him to go with her to see if it is still there. ?Think it?s still there,? she asks. They have three hours to kill before she can go to the hospital to see her mother who will be taken to have an MRI, so he drives her to a field and a large oak tree. At the spot, Kate measures off six steps and they dig. Kate hits a metal box. She pulls it up out of the ground, cleans off the top, and opens it. Inside are things kids would put in. Evidently, it was 1989 when they buried it. They had planned to open it twenty years later. It has been only sixteen. There is a tape and they listen as their young voices come through. Tom holds the small plane?did he once dreamed of being a pilot. He tells her that in twenty years they?ll be together and married with nine kids. She tells him no, that as soon as she gets her license she plans to run away. ?And you know why.? We don?t so that leads to any number of questions in the back of our minds. They laugh and Kate and Tom look at each other. They kiss. They break apart and Tom tells her they have to go. At the hospital, Tom arranges for Kate?s mother to be outside in a hall waiting for the MRI and he?ll be in his office. Kate approaches her mother hesitantly and, holding her hand, calls her attention to her presence. The mother, obviously very ill, is slow to respond??Katherine?? Kate tells her she is sorry for what she put her through. When her mother responds, it is a surprise because she calls for help. The technician hears her and rushes to find Kate, who runs after knocking out the cop who was trying to hold her. He has called 911, saying there was a situation at the hospital. Tom rushes out and Kate tells him she needs the keys to his car. He runs with her trying to get her to give herself up. She drives out of the parking garage and stops at the exit as a police car swerves into place to block the exit. She begs Tom to get out and he refuses. Realizing she?s wasting valuable time, Kate guns the car to run the blockage. The cop fires as she rams his car to the side and she escapes, only to run into another car as she swerves around a corner. She looks Tom in horror. He?s dead, hit by the bullets. Crying, she exits the car and disappears down a wash. Now that is, basically, it?more questions. Back to the island: Charlie and Kate talk and he thinks that when he?s rescued, he?ll be very rich because he disappeared in a mysterious plane crash. They watch Jin and Michael work on the raft and one of the survivors approach. Art tells Michael he?d better wait another three or four months. Monsoon season is almost upon them because it?s been raining every afternoon. Monsoon, he says, means the trade winds blow south and, supposedly, according to Jack?s guess, the only thing south of them is Antarctica. They need northerly winds to find other people and possible rescue. Michael asks, ?When do we have to leave?? ?Yesterday,? is the answer. Michael and Jin work to get the boat/raft ready to go the next day. Kate tries to get a seat on the boat. She tells Michael she crewed for two summers on a J-boat. She is useful and Sawyer is not. Later Sawyer meets Kate accusing her of jockeying for his seat on the boat. She comes back at him, ??I want your spot. I?ll get your spot.? Sun asks Jin if he is really going and he says, ?I?m going.? Michael drinks some water and within seconds, has severe cramps in his stomach and vomits. He tells Walt to find Jack and Walt runs into Kate. She tells him to go back to be with his father and she?ll find Jack. In the meantime, Sayid has brought Jack out to meet Locke. They take him to the ?hatch?. Jack is stunned. ?What is this thing?? They have a conversation in which Jack accuses Locke of holding back. Locke says it was at his discretion to say whether he would tell the survivors. Jack wants to open it. Sayid says there is no handle and it can only be opened from the inside? ?It was never meant to be opened from the outside.? On their way back, Jack hears Kate yelling for him. She tells him about Michael and they run back to the beach. After getting Michael settled, Jack and Locke go to the boat. Jack says it wasn?t food poisoning because Jin ate the same thing. He rummages around and finds an empty water bottle that?s been tampered with. Hurley joins them and asks Jack if he thinks Kate did it and lets slip the fact Kate was a prisoner. Looking at Jack, he realizes he said something he shouldn?t. Jack knows Kate wants off the island, so he asks her if she did it. ?Do you think I?m capable of that?? She is hurt. ?I don?t know what you are capable of,? he retorts. Locke is at his camp, treating a wound when Walt appears. He watches for a minute then comes to Locke, saying he didn?t poison the water. Locke, concerned, says he believes him as he kneels down. He takes Walt?s hand. Walt?s eyes widen and his voice is fearful as he says: ?Don?t open it, Mr. Locke. Don?t open that thing.? Back at the beach, Sawyer is told by Michael he?s off the raft because he?s a criminal. Angry, Sawyer sees Kate and thinking she is the one who talked Michael into doing it, grabs her and then dumps her backpack. He picks up a passport. It belongs to Joanna the woman who drowned. He tells Michael that Kate was the one with the marshal and that she planned to use the passport to change her identity. ?She don?t care about nothin?, nobody, but herself.? He says. Kate admits she was being taken back to jail, but she did not poison him. Michael doesn?t believe her and gives Sawyer back his ?seat? on the boat/raft. Everyone moves away, leaving Kate standing alone?isolated and sad, to pick up her meager belongings in the backpack, including the toy plane. Later Jack talks to Sun and tells her he knows she poisoned the water. She admits it saying she didn?t want Jin to go. It?s obvious to him she loves her husband and she doesn?t, she says, want him to die out there. Jack tells her Jin is going, so she?d better be sure to tell him ?goodbye.? (Although it wasn?t said, it was obvious she used one of the syringes to doctor the water. She had access since she helped Jack with Boone.) Kate and Sawyer talk. He says he?s going because there?s nothing on the island to stay for. Both know what he?s saying. They are attracted to each other, he more than she. Kate says nothing to stop him. Walt joins his father and tells him he burned the boat and that he?s sorry. He did it because he wanted to stay. Michael forgives him, saying, ?We don?t have to go.? ?Yes, we do,? says Walt. (OH boy, now what?) Sun and Kate talk and we understand that Kate did suggest the poisoning so Sun could keep Jin on the island. It was a mistake that Michael got the doctored water. Neither suspected he would. Jack did not tell Jin, because as Kate says, ?Jack is good at keeping secrets.? Sun tells Kate how, when she was a little girl, she dreamed of finding the right man and believed when she married, she would live happily ever after. Kate murmurs, ?Yeah, me too!? AND THEN there were the previews for next week. REMARKS: I love the endearments Sawyer calls Kate: Sweet cheeks, Puddin?, Sassafrass and Freckles. I wonder how many more will come up before the end of the season. Notice Kate?s real name is Katherine. Let?s see now: We have three survivors who are now more or less islolated: Kate, Shannon and Locke. Interesting combination. DISCUSS: In the recording, Kate says she is going to get her license (Driver?s) and then leave home, saying ? ?and you know why.? We don?t, so speculate. Why did she leave home? What happened to make her dying mother call for help? Do you think the boat/raft will make it off the island or will something happen to stop them? What is under the hatch? Got any ideas yet? ***Get ready for the Frenchwoman with bad news. :boat: |

Well, perhaps Kate's a jinx!
yeah, that's the ticket! Wherever she goes, she brings bad luck to OTHERS.... So when her mom saw her, she yelled for help. and she ran away... getting her ex BF killed in the process.... then later getting the Marshal killed....
