LOST ? Episode 17
?In Transition ?She is my dream.? This week we finally see more of Sun and Jin and their back-story. The show itself was more about relationships and how the survivors are going to manage living together, especially since some have secrets. There was not a lot of action (accept a fight), so the mysterious things or beings were not brought into play. As I have in past columns, I?m going to tell Sun and Jin?s story en toto without interruptions. The first scene sees Jin standing looking out at the ocean. As before the scene then melds back to when he asked Sun?s father for her hand. He was kept waiting for a long time and her father, who we soon know is a bastard, finally demands to know why he wants to marry his daughter and what does Jin?s father think. Jin tells him he loves her and that his father is dead. He tells the father that he does have ambition to open a restaurant and then, someday, a hotel. ?What would you do for my daughter?? ?Anything.? Jin answers. I guess that meant he would work for Sun?s father, Mr. Paik. After the wedding, Sun is changing for the reception when Jin interrupts. He is ready for some ?be bop,? but she wants to wait for their honeymoon. He tells her he wants her father to know how committed he is to working for him and that in six months after his training, he promises he will take her on the honeymoon they have always ?dreamed of.? Working for the father does not come without its difficulties. Jin was obviously in the factory (don?t know what his job was there or what was made). However, he comes to report an accident to a piece of machinery. He thinks he?s going to be reamed for the accident, but instead the father promotes him to ?enforcer.? His first job is to talk to the Secretary of Environment Safety, Byung Han, and get them to let the factory stay open. Jin goes to the man?s house. He invites Jin in and he sees the man?s daughter watching TV. Jin is polite and tells the man Mr. Paik is displeased. The man practically falls all over Jin, assuring him that everything will be okay. He even takes his little girl?s dog and hands it to him as a gift. The next night or so Sun has cooked Jin a special dinner. The cell phone rings and he?s about to answer when he sees her face. He puts it away in his pocket. The phone ring persists until he finally answers to hear his father-in-law?s voice. It seems the factory is closed. Sun?s father is very angry. He wants to see Jin immediately. At the office, he tells Jin to go with the man standing nearby and learn how to deliver my message. Jin sees the gun and knows what is going to happen. He forestalls the murder by delivering a terrible beating to the man, whispering that he has just saved his life. They reprised the scene in the bathroom when Sun sees he and his clothes are covered with blood. (It was from Episode 6). Later, after the blow-up on the beach, Jin returns to the time after the beating when he went to see his father, the fisherman. He confesses he was ashamed that he was the son of a fisherman. He tells his father some of what happened and that he is afraid of losing Sun. The father wisely suggests that he go to America to save their marriage. That?s the back-story. Now interspersed with it, are happenings at the beach and the caves. Back at the beach, Jin is watching the ocean when Sun appears wearing a bathing suit. She wants to go swimming. He objects trying to cover her body with a towel and accidentally pulls her to the ground. Michael sees this and hurries over. He and Jin get into a brief fight. Sun slaps Michael, who can?t believe it. The beach mellows out. Sun goes to Michael to apologize for slapping him, saying that ?I was protecting you.? ?Not my problem,? answers Michael, ?it?s yours! Shannon and Sayid talk. He compliments her on her knot tying. She tells him she learned by dating men with sailboats. Easy to see they like each other. Shannon proposes they learn about each other. Hurley accosts Jin who is smacking golf rocks at the island ?golf course.? Jin ignores his overtures. At the beach, Michael is finishing the boat, making some last minute adjustments. Michael talks to Walt about going to NY and seeing the buildings, especially the Flatiron building, which was so inspiring to him that he began drawing and designing. Jack tells him people are discussing the boat. Michael says Sawyer is coming (he paid for it) and that there is only room for one more. Kate talks to Sun about Jin?s jealousy. Sun tells her she wishes he would be as he used to be, ?he wasn?t always like this,? but he changed when he went to work for her father. Sayid finds Shannon making a shelter and helps. That night, however, the boat is set on fire. Michael thinks Jin did it and he isn?t around. The next day Sayid talked to Boone, Shannon?s brother, about seeing Shannon on a personal basis. He says they might become more than just friends. Boone warns him that she likes older guys who will take care of her and when she gets what she wants, she leaves. (Not easy to do here on the island, I would think.) Meanwhile Sawyer has found Jin who is trying to wash his hands. It looks like he was burned. Sayid tells Shannon to forget any attempt at a relationship. Shannon goes to find Boone and tells him to butt out of her life (or in so many words). She runs into Locke, however, who informs her that by her actions, she gives Boone something: ?Giving him what he wants, attention.? He reminds her she is a grown woman. There is a chance to start new on the island. He is challenging her. Sawyer takes Jin back to the beach to face Michael. Everyone thinks the Korean did it. A fight ensues in which Michael beats up Jin who doesn?t fight back. Everyone is gathered about including Sun, who finally yells, ?Stop it!? Everybody is stunned, including Jin. (The only two who are not are Kate and Michael) Sun tells them that Jin did not set the fire? that he burned his hands trying to put it out. Locke steps in and tells everyone who are so busy casting aspersions on Jin that they have forgotten: ?We?re not the only people on this island and we all know it!? Sun and Jin confront each other?but Sun does all the talking. Jin is silent. (Stupid male ego) She confesses she was going to leave him, but then she saw that he loved her and wanted to start over just from the beginning. That?s all she wants to do now?start over. He stops, thinks about what his father told him, goes back to her, and delivers the knockout blow. ?It?s too late.? (In sub-titles) He is determined not to tell her about her father?s evil. (Stupid male ego again) The final act shows people various distances around the signal fire. Sayid and Shannon kiss. She wants to start a new life. Locke finds Walt with the backgammon set and sits down to play. Hurley, it seems, owes Walt $83,000. ?You have a Dad,? asks Walt. ?Yeah, everyone has a father.? ?Is he cool?? ?No.? Locke looks at Walt. ?Mind if I ask you a question?? Walt says no. ?Why did you burn the raft?? ?I don?t want to move anymore,? he answers. ?I like it here.? The next morning as Michael surveys the damage to the boat, Jin appears with fresh stalks of bamboo. They make peace with one another. Object: a boat to get them off the island. Sun appears in a bathing suit further down the beach. She drops the towel and goes to stand in the water as Hurley?s CD plays, then stops abruptly. Batteries needed. REMARKS After so much mystery and excitement, I liked having the show focus on no mysterious inhabitants or danger, just people and relationships. They can go at it next episode and it looks as if they will. They seem to be pairing off four main characters: Shannon and Sayid, Claire and Charlie. Then of course, they broke up Jin and Sun. DISCUSS: Do you think Jin and Sun will someday start all over again? Or do you think they will remain at odds? Locke seems to be quite ?knowledgeable? considering he?s the guru of hunters. What role do you think he will continue to play?orchestrator of events? Hunting buddy? Minister of Defense? Voice of Doom? (The last is a tongue-in-cheek comment) Do you think Michael will be the only one to leave the island?safely? On the other hand, will he lose to the unseen forces ?running? the lives of the castaways? Who will be the next one to die? TUNE IN next week? :boat: |
