LOST ? Episode 16
OUTLAWS ?It ain?t that simple.? This was a rocking episode. I was enthralled with Sawyer. I love this guy every time I see him. He looks like an outlaw. I would be attracted to him immediately, bastard that he is. Oh well, enough daydreaming. I do have to apologize: I thought I had taped the entire show, but something happened and it stopped half way through. Consequently I might be a little out of sync in some of the tale. In this appropriately named episode, we get to know a lot more about Sawyer and a tiny bit more about Kate and Sayid. The episode opens with a woman cautioning her little boy to be quiet and hide under the bed. In the background, we hear banging at the front door (?) and yelling. She shuts the door and then as the camera stays on the little boy, there is a shot, thud, and silence. Then footsteps approach and the door is opened. All we see are lower half of legs wearing cowboy boots. They approach the bed, turn and the man sits down. Moments later, we hear a gun shot as he kills himself. Sawyer wakes up from his dream in his space, hearing something. He sees a boar in his tent, rooting around his things. He takes off after it and in the jungle, he hears whispers, voices that are scary. He sees nothing. To continue Sawyer?s back-story, we see him as he is now just months ago. He enters a hotel room with a woman only to be confronted by his ex-partner, Hibbs, who had double-crossed him in Tampa. Hibbs gives him an envelope and tells him that the man who ruined his life, the con man, is now in Sydney to be exact. He is using the name Duckett. He runs a shrimp truck. The information is in the envelope. This should make them even. In Sydney, Sawyer buys a .347 magnum with hard point loads. The man who sells it to him tells him that if he finds he doesn?t have it in him to kill the man he is after, there are no refunds! Sawyer finds Duckett running a roadside stand, selling shrimp. He stands there watching the man cook up shrimp. He pulls out the gun and holds it to his side. He is contemplating the death of the man who by his actions killed both his parents. However, he cannot bring himself to do it. He leaves. He is drinking in a bar. There is only one other customer, another American. Strangely, it is Jack?s Dad he meets, who tells him ?Australia is the closest to Hell you can get without being burned.? As they talk and drink booze, Jack?s Dad relates what happened to him. The conversation goes a little like this: ?I have a son.? (Jack)says the father, who goes on to say Jack did something brave. ?I feel gratitude and pride at his courage. I could tell him I love him.? ?Why not?? says Sawyer. ?Because I am weak.? That?s about it, but now here is the link between Jack and Sawyer. Anyway, the father encourages Sawyer to take care of whatever it is causing him to drink heavily. ?It ain?t that simple,? says Sawyer. However, he does go back to the shrimp stand, gathering his own courage to face down an enemy he has hated for so many years. Finally, the man exits the stand carrying garbage bags. It is stormy and raining hard. When Duckett turns from the bins, he sees Sawyer who shoots him. As the man is dying, he tells Sawyer he was going to pay back the money he borrowed from Hibbs. Sawyer is horrified. He was conned by Hibbs to do his dirty work. Hibbs has double-crossed him again. Back to the island. The next morning after Sawyer chased the boar, Sayid approaches him to find out what happened. Sawyer tells him about the boar. Sayid turns to leave, but Sawyer goes after him. He wants to know what Sayid heard in the jungle. ?I thought I heard whispering.? ?What was it saying,? asks Sawyer. ?Why?? answers Sayid. Then he looks at Sawyer. ?Did you hear something?? ?I didn?t hear anything.? Elsewhere, Kate gives the gun back to Jack and watches him put it away. Jack tells her that Sawyer is the only one who didn?t give it back. She tells him she can get it back for him. He asks her to be careful in dealing with the man. ?I don?t want you to owe him.? Sawyer is looking for the tarpaulin the boar ran off with into the jungle. He finds it and is on his way back when the boar chases after him. The animal knocks Sawyer over into the mud and disappears. Charlie and Claire meet. She wants him to take a walk, but Charlie says he has to do something first. He and Hurley head into a clearing and dig a grave. There is a body wrapped in a tarpaulin nearby. It is Ethan. Hurley tells Charlie he thinks Ethan might rise from the dead and come after them, getting Hurley first since he?s heavy and gets cramps. (As always, Hurley once more provides a chuckle.) Charlie is determined to bury him and his demeanor scares Hurley, who looks for Sayid to tell him about Charlie. He thinks something is wrong with the rocker. Sayid thinks Hurley is thinking of post-traumatic stress syndrome. In the meantime, Sawyer has his gun and a backpack. He is in the jungle hunting for the boar. He has been tracking for a while. Kate joins him. She tells him he has been tracking everything, but the boar, including a bird, Boone, and even himself. ?Give me carte blanche and I?ll help you.? By carte blanche, he agrees to give her anything that she needs from his stash, including toothpaste, brush, and soap. He agrees. She leads out. They haven?t found the boar by nightfall, so they camp. There is a fire burning. Sawyer takes out a small bottle of liquor that he tells Kate he confiscated from the wrecked plane?s supply. She wants some, but he tells her only if she?ll play ?I never?. The premise is if it?s a lie, i.e. I never was in love, but if it is something they did do, each has to take a drink. The game progresses. ?I never fell in love.? (She does, he didn?t) I never was married. (She was, he wasn?t.) They go through several ?I nevers.? Some of which they both drink as an answer, others just one. Then Sawyer says, ?I never killed a man.? He takes a drink. Slowly, Kate joins him. ?We have something in common after all,? says Sawyer and they stare at each other. Later, as he is dreaming, Kate wakes him up. The boar was in their camp and attacked his things, even peed on his shirt. (This is hilarious.) The boar did not touch any of Kate?s things. Sawyer is positive the boar is out to get him. Just then, Locke joins them and Sawyer tells him what happened. Locke then relates a story from his past. His sister was killed in an accident. She broke her neck when she fell off the monkey bars at school. His foster mother was stricken with a terrible guilt that desolated her: she didn?t eat or sleep. Then a few days after the accident, a golden lab walked into their lives. He came into the house and sat down in front of the foster mother staring into her eyes. Things returned to normal. The dog stayed with them, sleeping in his sister?s room, at night. Then his mother passed five years later. The dog disappeared the next day. The dog actually seemed to let her off the hook. Back at the beach, Charlie is relentlessly breaking into coconuts for the food and water. Sayid joins him and tells him a story about how he participated in an execution of a man when he was in the guards in Iraq. He relates that later he had dreams about it. ?You are not alone,? he tells Charlie. Locke has left Kate and Sawyer. Later on, they find a wallow that the boar probably uses. Nearby they hear a noise and Sawyer finds a baby boar. He shouts out into the jungle that the boar better get here or he?ll do something. Kate leaves him in disgust to find his own way back. He puts the baby boar down and discovers he doesn?t know where he is. Suddenly the boar is in front of him. Sawyer whips the gun out to kill the animal, but actually the two stare at each other. Neither moves. Kate is watching. Sawyer brings the gun to his side, not taking his eyes off the animal. He sees Kate. ?It?s just a boar.? He turns to follow her. The final act has Claire watching the activity at the beach. Charlie joins her and they take the walk she wanted earlier. Sawyer approaches Jack and gives him the gun. During their conversation, Jack tells him ?that?s why the Sox will never win the Series.? The words ring a bell with Sawyer who asks him about it. Sawyer realizes during the ensuing conversation that Jack was the surgeon?s son he spoke about in the bar. (I was hoping they?d make the connection, but not in JJ?s world.) Sawyer leaves without revealing anything Jack?s father had said about him. Jack wants to know why he?s interested. Sawyer looks at him, answering, ?No reason!? REMARKS I guess you can tell by now that I really do like Sawyer. What a hunk! His voice is to die for?sorry guys. Did you notice that Sawyer has now added ?Sassafras? to the other name he refers to Kate by??Freckles? I think he?s genuinely fond of her. It?s probably the first time in his life that love might find a way into his life. We have not been taken back to the secret door in the ground. Locke and Boone were involved trying to open it. I really like the quote I pulled from the show. ?It ain?t that simple.? As with all of JJ?s shows, it never is? DISCUSS Do you think Kate is attracted more to Sawyer now that they have ?something in common?? Do you think the boar was telling Sawyer something? After all, we were told earlier that all the boar had left the area, knowing they were being hunted. Is this boar, Sawyer?s ?dog?? Will Sawyer change? (I hope not!) Will we learn about Kate?s marriage? (She says it was short term) What about the man she killed? Did it have anything to do with the bank robbery? The voices in the jungle: are they real and if not, what do they represent? Will the other leading characters hear them also? :boat: |
