I think the backstory was important.
First of all, it makes Charlie more human by showing a darker side- one that would allow him to steal (to finance his drug use) from people who had been trying to help him. Second, it further establishes the basis for why he feels like dead weight to the community. In The Moth we saw Charlie as a man who had this dream for Driveshaft, and his brother not only tried to take over being the big rock star but got him hooked on drugs. Now we see Charlie as a petty criminal who is told that the only person he'll ever take care of is himself. It's no wonder he likes Claire so much, aside from her being a great person. He needs to prove to himself that he's capable of looking out for her with no benefit to himself. |

I liked this episode, and I gotta say, all backstories are important...it gives us a look into the character, why they are the way they are, and what they may or may not do in the future.
And I gotta say, Sawyer is hot, but he's really gotta work on that bod! And, I'm eager to find out what makes Hurley tick! |
