LOST ? Episode
Hearts and Minds ?Time To Let Go? This week?s episode was about Boone and Shannon. Their back-story was presented and I didn?t like the editing job because there was so much going on with the cast. It was like: oh, oh, we haven?t shown much of the others, so let?s put them into the episode. In a sense, I thought two main characters got less airtime than the others. Boone and Shannon: They are not blood relatives, but stepbrother and stepsister. As the story unfolds, we see that Boone is seemingly on his stepsister?s beck and call. He has finished playing tennis when he receives a call from Shannon asking for help and she tells him she?s in Sydney. He drops everything to fly to the Land of Oz and finds her, with a boyfriend. We soon learn that Boone is the pay-off guy; he picks up after Shannon makes a play for some bozo and he buys them off. However, this time is different. He finds out Shannon does it in order to get money. She organizes the entire scene, calls Boone and he comes to payoff the boyfriend. Shannon uses it to get money her mother won?t give her. This time he pays fifty thousand. When he goes to pick her up, Boone finds the boyfriend around still and that?s when he learns the awful truth about her. The boyfriend beats Boone up, but Shannon stops him. Boone goes to the police but they tell him they can?t ?raid? the apartment, because Shannon is an adult and he is not a blood relative. (Interesting to note: Sawyer is being brought into the station by two policemen, protesting his innocence. He passes Boone talking to the plainclothes cop. That?s the only time we see him in this episode.) Later at his hotel, Boone is cleaning his face when he hears a knock at the door. It?s Shannon. Once inside the room, she tells him she knows he loves her. They kiss and whoop, onto the bed. Somehow, he got her to leave Sydney and fly back to L. A. Back on the island, Boone and Locke have been going out almost every day, ostensibly to hunt for boar. However, they haven?t found any simply because they are more interested in finding a way into the ?trapdoor? they have found. Shannon, meanwhile, has made a friend of Sayid who brings her a pair of shoes he found which happen to be only a half size larger than her own size, but she smiles and tells him the weather has made her feet swell. Boone sees this and wonders if the pattern is starting all over again. Like there was a chance in hell Sayid would ask for money and what would he do with it once he had a check. I didn?t notice any bank close by. Back at the ?trapdoor?, Boone and Locke are discussing ways to get into the ?door?. Boone begins to think it?s hopeless. Locke however keeps staring at the door. Boone thinks he?s crazy and Locke tells him a story about Michelangelo and the statue of David. Boone wants to tell Shannon because she keeps after him about why he and Locke go out into the jungle and don?t bring back any food. Locke tells him to go ahead, but when Boone turns to leave, Locke hits him over the head. Boone wakes up to find himself tied in such a way he can barely move. Before leaving, Locke throws a knife about a foot away in front of him, saying he?ll find a way to get the knife when the motivation is important enough. Locke leaves and on the way back to the beach sees Sayid looking at the maps that he stole from the Frenchwoman, Rousseau. He has constructed a small compass. Locke congratulates him on his inventiveness, but hands him the compass he?s wearing on his bush jacket. Meanwhile back ain the jungle, Boone struggles to reach the knife, but can?t quite make it. Suddenly he hears Shannon calling him for help. Shannon screams again and Boone makes a desperate attempt for the knife, reaching it and cutting himself loose. He rushes out to find her. They hear the ?beast? and start running with it behind them, roaring and thundering through the trees and undergrowth. Boone pulls Shannon into a thick strand of vines. The monster crashes and thrashes trying to get in but can?t. Boone protects Shannon and after awhile the ?beast? moves off. Minutes later, Boone pulls Shannon out onto the trail after making sure they are alone. Shannon wants to know where Locke is (the mighty hunter as he is regarded), but Boone doesn?t know. He does, however, tell her about the door they have been trying to open. Suddenly the monster is back and they run pell mell in front of the crashing, roaring ?beast?. Without warning, Shannon is picked up screaming and carried off. Boone follows a blood trail along a stream and finds her mauled and very dead. Absolutely distraught and grieving, he picks her up holding her close to him. Hurley (haven?t seen him in awhile) meanwhile accosts Jack and tells him he?s having trouble with his stomach. When Jack asks what he?s been eating, Hurley runs off a litany of fruit?no protein. Jack tells him he needs it and that he should get fish from the Korean. Hurley says Jin doesn?t like him because he turned down the food he offered after the crash. Jack still tells him he needs more protein. Hurley says Locke has been going out every day, but hasn?t brought any pork (read boar here). He thinks Locke is sloughing off on the job. At the beach, Hurley finds Jin getting ready to ?fish? again. He goes with him after a brief discussion, mostly on Hurley?s part. Later, we see Hurley out in the water trying to kill fish with ?paddles? at least it looked that way. Jin meanwhile has caught several fish with his net. Coming out of the water, Hurley steps on coral, rock, something and howls in pain. Jin brings him into the beach and Hurley demands he ?pee? on the wound. I?m not sure Jin did it, but later at the cave, Jin brings Hurley a cleaned fish. Sun is also back. In this episode, we see her planting a garden. Kate who ran into Jack while hunting for crop food shows him what she and Sun are doing. Jack who thinks it?s a great idea leaves them. Kate chatters on and suddenly realizes Sun knows English. She asks why the secret and Sun tells her not to tell anybody; that only Michael knows. She especially doesn?t want her husband to know, because she loves him. Kate is asked by Sun, ?Have you ever lied to someone you love?? I liked that piece of dialogue immensely. The look on Kate?s face shows that she has. Later she sees the two together and knows Sun?s secret is going to stay that way. At the beach, Locke is sitting staring out to sea. Jack joins him briefly to talk about the boar meat. Locke tells him he thinks the boar have migrated into another valley, because they are being hunted by a more deadly predator than they?man. Jack leaves and talks to both Charlie and Michael about Locke. If he isn?t hunting, then what is he doing out in the jungle. Sayid joins Jack and asks him which way is north. Jack figures it out using the sun and points in the direction. Sayid shows him the compass Locke gave him. He points it in the direction Jack gave him. The compass point is many degrees off. We next see Boone heading for the beach, blood on his face and shirt, where he finds Locke?waiting. He tells him the terrible story and Locke asks him what is he talking about?Shannon is alive and talking to Sayid a short distance away. Boone is horrified. He just saw her lying dead in the stream. It?s obvious she isn?t dead?what the hell? ?You have no blood on you.? Locke says and suddenly as we look at Boone, the blood on his face and shirt are gone. Locke gets up and says, ?Time to let her go. Follow me.? Boone takes another look at a very alive Shannon and leaves with the hunter. REMARKS AND DISCUSSION Other than the fact they kept some scenes to a bare minimum, it was a good one. It also leads to some very interesting questions. The monster or beast or whatever you want to call it is?what? Is it an analogy that comes alive, i.e. does this ?thing? represent Fear? What do those who have ?looked up? seen including who or what Boone saw? OR is it something real? Remember the pilot who was alive was taken by it and his bloody corpse dumped in a tree? Was the pilot real or someone Jack, Kate, and Sawyer thought they saw or wanted to see? Was it real to them, because the pilot could tell them where they were? What about Shannon, dead, on the rocks in the stream? Was this an illusion Boone wanted to see? What was Sawyer doing in the police station in Sydney? Was he playing his con game again? Sun tells Kate she loves Jin, but why was she thinking about leaving him? Why doesn?t she want him to know she speaks English? I noticed Hurley had stubble on his face. Time wise, the group has been on the island for three weeks. Seems to me it would have been a bit longer. Jack looks ugly with his (my opinion). Locke doesn?t have any, but that?s because he uses one of his knives to scrape away his beard. I would think some of the men would want to shave also, but still it does give the show a more real look. I would like to see what your thoughts are on the above. :boat: |

Fantastic column again, although I thought this episode was one of the better episodes of the season.
Other questions to ponder Michael had a box that he was looking at, and when his son came running in, he hurriedly put it away....hmm.....what was he looking at? I LOVE how there really isn't beast, that it's an illusion with their minds, but when Boone told Locke, "The stuff you put on my head, you drugged me..." Boone didn't disagree, he just said, "I believed that you needed an experience in order to survive on this island" So did Locke really drug him? And with what? WHAT THE HELL is going on with that compass that Sayid was playing with? Where are they if North isn't north and West isn't west?? I NEED ANSWERS!!! AGAIN - what is in the hatch? And if Locke and Boone aren't hunting, where's the meat gonna come from? |

A couple things. First, it was Charlie (not Sawyer) who accompanied Jack and Kate to the cockpit when the pilot was killed by the thing.
Second, the way I understood the whole Shannon-Boone money angle was that Shannon's dad married Boone's mother. When Shannon's dad died, he left his money to his second wife (Boone's mom) and pretty much cut Shannon off financially. She resents this and resorts to fraud and blackmail. |
