LOST ? Episode 7
?We shouldn?t have survived.?

At last, someone has analyzed the crash and said something sensible. I pondered which quote to use of the episode and felt this one was the best. There were dozens I could have used, but you will find a couple down the way.

This week it was about Charlie and the moth. Overall theme was Charlie?s breakout from the cocoon of drugs he had wrapped himself in for a long time. We learn about the band he formed with his older brother Liam. Charlie gets him to promise to walk away if things start to go wrong. However, promises are only made to be broken. (Political insight, which comes with age?especially as we embark on another four years. Sorry, but it seemed appropriate.)

The story moves back and forth, as it usually does between reality and the past. Charlie relives everything that happened while he was in the band, Drive Shaft, and was a bad, including the ?roadies,? the sex, drinking and the drugs. He has an argument with his brother and slowly finds himself drawn into the sex, drugs, and alcohol. Just before leaving on the plane that became ?lost?, he had gone to see Liam who somehow broke loose and was living in Sydney, Australia with his wife and little girl. He wants Charlie to stay with them and get help. Charlie refuses and boards the fateful flight.

Anyway, as the story rolls along we find that Charlie has given his drugs to Locke. He is going through withdrawals. He wants them back, but Locke tells him he will only give them back after Charlie asks for them three times. This was the first. Locke has him go with him on a walk through the forest and he uses Charlie as bait to catch a boar. Later Charlie goes looking for him again. Locke is skinning the boar and after Charlie asks, he shows him a beautiful cocoon. Inside is a moth that grows stronger as it struggles to emerge. He is giving Charlie a lesson in breakout.

Back at the beach, Kate, Sayid, and Boone are getting ready to triangulate the transmission they heard. Sayid gives them very specific instructions regarding the triangulation and the shooting of the flares. This occurs after Jack and others leave for the caves. Sawyer takes over Jack?s digs. One short scene has Kate asking the scavenger, Sawyer, for batteries from the laptops he has corralled from the plane. Sayid and Kate leave Boone at the beach and one of the points of the triangulation.

As Kate and Sayid walk into the jungle. He tells her that the rear of the plane fell off and yet they somehow survived when all common sense should tell them they should all be dead. This gives Kate something to think about?or worry.

Meanwhile in another part of the forest?no I mean jungle, Jack is talking to Charlie inside one of the caves. Suddenly the roof gives way and Jack is inside while Charlie is outside. Charlie tells the others and Michael takes over. He?s been in construction for 8 years. Soon all are working hard to pull out the rock from a safe spot so they can get to Jack. Charlie is told to go back to the beach and get more help.

He gets to the beach and gathers several people to help including Boone who now has to get Shannon, his sister, to do his job. She agrees. Charlie remembers that he was supposed to tell Kate, but Sawyer says he missed her by minutes. He tells Charlie he will go after her and report the news. Of course he catches up with them and as he is about to tell Kate, she stops him because she thinks he?s coming on to her. Therefore, he lets her have her way about it and instead says he can help. At the jungle triangulation, Sayid leave Kate and Sawyer. He is worried that the man will do more to Kate, but she says she can handle him. Now what was it she was arrested for? Sayid heads for the high point. He sets off the flare. It?s followed by the one at the beach and the one where Kate and Sawyer were, but Kate isn?t there.

Sawyer accidentally told Kate Jack would be remembered, and when she caught the phrase and pressed him, he had to tell her Jack had been buried alive in the cave. She tossed the flare at him and heads into the jungle for the cave.

At the cave, the group has pulled out rock enough to let a small person through. They have ascertained Jack is alive, but hurt. Charlie volunteers to go?everyone else he says has someone to look after, so he should be the one. In he goes with just a flashlight, but as he is almost there, the tunnel caves in and he barely as enough time to drop into the cave where Jack is lying. He lifts the heavy rock off Jack, who tells him he has a dislocated shoulder. He wants Charlie to ?pop? the shoulder back into its socket. ?You can do this, Charlie.? Moreover, guess what, he can and does. Jack gives Charlie a good deal of encouragement. He had recognized earlier that he was going through withdrawals.
He tells Charlie that they have to be careful with what little air they have, when Charlie suddenly spots a MOTH flittering about in the cave. He follows it and find light coming from ahead filtering from above them.

Kate has the group digging from the other side and Michael has told her to get some rest. It?s Walt, who spots the doctor and Jack walking toward them. Kate rushes to hug Jack while Hurley hugs Charlie.

Up on the hill at the triangulation point that Sayid is at, he sets off the flare. The one from the beach, then the one from where Sawyer is in the jungle follow it. Sayid turns on the triangulation equipment and watches as it catches the transmission. He is about to yell that he has the information when he is hit from behind. Oh God, now what?

At the caves it is determined by Michael the other ones are safe. Kate fixes a sling for the doctor before leaving for the beach. Charlie finds Locke who is cooking the boar. He asks him for the drugs and throws them into the fire. As they burn, a moth slowly flies away.

It was a very good episode and now we have a young clean Charlie. His back story is about finished.

COMMENTS:
I wonder how long it will take the others to realize that it was nothing short of a miracle that they are still alive.

Locke seems to have become in tune with the island and his ability to see how to help people will probably continue as the weeks progress.

This is definitely a character driven show at present as the passengers struggle to survive in an environment unfamiliar to them all.

Sun and Jin were not prominent in this episode other than Jin keeps telling her to cover-up and this time she told him it was hot as the reason she would not comply.

Who the heck knocked out Sayid? Is there someone else still alive on the island? On the other hand, something with intelligence?

Kate and Jack had one scene of hugginess and how long will it take to become a little bit more? Oh yeah, the show is on at eight ? that might not happen for a while.

Sun seems to be attracted to Michael. Will this provide more drama as the weeks progress?

Who is Sawyer? What is his story? It is about time we find out a little more about him.
Oh boy does he look good without a shirt. He has been training those abs.

Kate and Jack had one scene of hugginess and how long will it take to become a little bit more? Oh yeah, the show is on at eight ? that might not happen for a while.
-Ha ha well I dunno if anyone noticed the commerical for next week where it looked like Kate and Sawyer kissed

Sun seems to be attracted to Michael. Will this provide more drama as the weeks progress?
-I dunno if the word is attracted I think she see's him like a protector or something I don't get that she likes him from her actions

Who is Sawyer? What is his story? It is about time we find out a little more about him.
-I still want to know about that letter...Saywer he looks good sometimes and other times he really looks like a hick

I have a question for you:
-Do you like that it is way more character driven than Alias...which I think is more action driven but is still half and half?

Question for anyone:
-Does anyone remember what Sayid said he was like apart of what army or w/e....

- i think jack's dad knocked him out. when i saw how close that signal was i was like "woooooahhhh dude..... that's like, right next to him!" and then *wack!*

HAHA! i thought the kid's name was sun (it isn't, right????) is sun the korean lady? yeah, i don't think she likes him, but she likes him because he understands her and didn't let out her secret.

I loved the episode. Some did not like the simple back story on Charlie but I did. Some felt the story was unsurprising but I was very surprised by Charlie?s religious faith. Others did not like the similarity to real life ?Behind the Music? story on drugs and rock. I found that fine. After all the reason that is repetitive is that?s what drugs tend to do. If you want the characterization to be realistic sticking to the normal is not a bad idea sometimes. With a drug abuse story line I don?t look for something different, I look for how well acted it is.

I loved Sayid pointing out the impossibility of their survival. That helps take care of a lot of the nit pick complaints as long as the reason turns out well done in the end.
