LOST ? Episode 4
?Don?t tell me what I can?t Do.?
By Lenafan

This program really intrigues me. It has excellent possibilities. It would be nice to know if they will run it twenty straight weeks and follow it with twenty straight weeks of Alias. Now that would be quite a tandem. By putting Alias on at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesdays instead of 9:00 p.m. on Sundays, it would certainly alleviate the scheduling problem with conflicting programs.

This week, we focus on Locke. First, we learn that he can wiggle his toes. Subsequently we learn he was in a wheelchair when he came on board the plane in Australia. He was sent back by a touring company that took able-bodied people into the outback. He was an accountant in a U.S. firm and his boss was a young jerk. He had a dream: to go on a walkabout. He knows he can do it. He has a phone relationship with a woman who usually talks about sex. However, that is not what he?s about. Locke wants her to go to Australia with him. However, she declines and cuts him off and we hear that he was paying her $89.00 an hour to listen.

He goes to Australia by himself. He is turned down for the tour when the director sees that Locke is disabled. Locke has believed he can take this ?spiritual journey? without being a burden to anyone. The director refuses his impassioned plea and he will not be able to board the bus. Locke angrily watches it leave without him, which, course is the reason he?s on board the plane.

Back on the beach after the accident, Locke regains his senses and sees his toes wiggle. Somehow, he has regained the use of his legs. He knows that some kind of miracle happened and I?m sure he has no idea why. He makes a friend of Walt, the young boy, and that?s about it when it comes to the rest of the passengers.

On the fourth day after the accident, he tells everyone that they, the passengers, will have to hunt for their food. They ask with what and he pulls a BIG knife to show them. He will lead a hunting party into the jungle to get a wild boar. Kate and Michael, Walt?s father, decide to go with him. They run into boar, which charges and wounds Michael. Kate will help him back to camp while Locke hunts the boar that wounded him.

The reason Kate is along, is a transceiver Sayid has repaired hoping to get a fix on the origin of the French woman?s message sent sixteen years plus ago. Kate climbs a tall tree and she is getting it fixed in a notch when there is a familiar sound of roaring and trampling of bushes. She drops the transceiver and Michael below her is extremely frightened. Ahead of them, several meters, Locke draws his weapon, waiting for whatever is coming for him. At the same time, Kate drops down from the tree, picks up the broken transceiver, helps Michael escape from the scene, leaving Locke to his fate. She is brave, I said, not stupid.

Kate?s mystery is still not solved and if I know JJ, he?s going to draw it out a little further. During this episode, she is brave and still able to conquer her fear of what she knows is in the jungle to go with Locke and Michael. She obviously is intrigued by the message. There was a point where I thought she would tell Jack about herself, but not yet.

Meanwhile Jack is busy with the group, keeping them hunting for firewood. They have to set fire to the plane in order to burn the bodies. When the episode opened, they heard something from inside the plane and discovered wild boars at work. It was then Jack told the rest of them they had to get rid of the bodies by burning them. By setting fire to the fuselage that night, he also hoped someone would see it.

The Aussie pregnant woman, Clare, wants them all to work to learn more about those left inside and have a memorial. Obviously, she is kind and thoughtful. Clare is very much different from Shannon who is selfish and unthinking. An example of this is her conning Charlie to fish for her. No doubt he?ll find out she is using him. He and Hurley look for fish in the surf, catches one and, bringing to her, has it taken by her as she triumphantly tells her brother that she told him she could find food. Charlie is stunned by her selfishness. At the beginning of the scene when she asked him if he could fish, he?s in the bushes trying to get a fix and shaking bad. I will assume he will come to the end of his drugs and we?ll see him in withdrawal big time.

Meanwhile Shannon?s brother informs Jack that the African American woman, Rose, has been sitting alone on the beach for a couple of days. (Doesn?t anyone have to go to the bathroom?) Jack visits her and learns that she thinks her husband is alive. He urges her to eat and especially to drink. She responds and gets up. She doesn?t believe he?s dead, but Jack has told her that he was in the rear section of the plane?the part that fell into the ocean.

Our curiosity is peaked when Jack sees a man watching from a distance. It?s definitely not someone from the wrecked plane, at least I don?t think so. Oddly, he is wearing a pair of white shoes with a dark suit. (Think Pat Boone.) The second time he sees the stranger, Jack starts to run after him with Kate at his heels. They stop when they hear rustling in the bushes. Both stare as Locke drags a wild boar out to face them.

During the memorial service, Locke is listening and remembering what he met out there in the brush. He has a very small Mona Lisa type smile on his face.

Of course, I looked at the promos and discarded any attempt to make anything about them. They never really tell you exactly what will happen. I know from my Alias experience that one cannot judge the future by what J.J. Abrams permits us to see in advance.

There is a ton of unanswered questions after four episodes, but here are four of them:

Who is Kate and what was she wanted for?

What is out there in the jungle beside wild boar?

What thing took the pilot?

Was it a miracle that cured Locke?

If you?d like to post an answer to one or all of these, be my guest. It would be fun, however, to return in a few weeks to see how many of you were right.

I'm sure we will find out about it later, but I'm not sure as I reviewed the show that he saw "a monster" per se.
We certainly are assuming Locke experienced a miracle in that he could walk again after spending 4 years in a wheelchair. However we don't know whether it was an accident or disease--YET.
What is he trying to hide...meaning what he saw...perhaps something few if any of the other survivors would understand...
Guess we'll have to wait.

;)

I'm not sure if it's this ep or next one, but he tells someone that he looked straight into the eye of the island. What does that mean?

I was wondering that too! he said that to Jack in the next ep "White Rabbit". Maybe he did see the monster, but it didn't kill him and he was overwhelmed with the fact that it didn't and thinks that there's something different and almost beautiful about the island

Well...it's a question of wether Locke was really paralyzed or if it was just an aid because he found it very difficult to walk? He looked like he was going through a lot of effort to get back up on the beach, and although he seemed a bit surprised that he could stand, it wasn't SOOO much. And I don't blame him for not telling them. He doesn't want to be seen as different because of his disability (former or repressed), and he doesn't want anybody to feel sorry for him or treat him differently. I also think he lied about seeing the monster...but we shall see.

My verdict is still out on who Jack is seeing, and I REALLY can't wait to see wait to find out Kate did!

Jack's idea to burn the bodies: I'm amazed they didn't come up with that sooner. I know we saw Jack and Boone covering their mouths, but the stench of those dead bodies would've made the ENTIRE BEACH damn unpleasant, not just to mention the fuselage. I also think they could have been more productive in using the fuselage for a form of shelter.

And on another point! Remember when the ENTIRE PLANE WENT BOOM! I mean...how is the fuselage still there and why didn't the bodies get scortched then? I don't understand the continuancy of this show and its getting a bit much. They change the extras all the time. I know there's 48 of them, but I'm going to start counting just to be annoying...

Nobody has mentioned it, because it was only very tiny plot line, but Michael trusted his kid to the chinese (or korean?) woman who speaks no English, and seems to be the onluy one trying to make an effort to communicate with her. Suprisingly, no creepy peery-over-the-shoulder husband in this episode.

And B)

"Miracle" isn't the right term I think...behind of of the theories that people are putting out I think one but only one is true... so we'll see
