LOST ? Episode 2
?You?re Having A Bad Month? By Lenafan JJ Abrams didn?t disappoint. The second week was as good as the first. I?m seeing that this show is much different from Alias (except for Terry O?Quinn) in that it deals with a lot of character analysis and interaction. We can find the good and the bad among those who are ?lost? on the island already. Characters are introduced with their personal view of the plane?s breakup. We are told two stories regarding the crash. First we see Charlie and we know he ended up in the mid-section rather than in the tail section because he was running from confrontation by the flight attendants. He takes drugs and because they were suspicious and because he was going through withdrawals, he bolts for a bathroom in the mid-section. There we see him using and just as he was about to flush, the plane begins to rip apart. This is how I think JJ is going to introduce those main characters left to survive on his island. By the way, we had a lot of commercials during the first twenty minutes. I thought this was the pits, but then we had two longer sequences in the latter half of the show. The three: Kate, Jack, and Charlie return to find two men fighting. One is calling the other a terrorist, accusing him of sabotaging the plane so it would crash. Names are becoming clearer. Hurley is the young fat man, ?lardo? as one man calls him, but Hurley is a kindhearted person who doesn?t like blood. When Jack asks for his help later on in the show, Hurley faints on top of the man with the shrapnel. Sayid is the one who can fix the transceiver, but who also, as he relates to Hurley, was a member of the Republican Guard during the Gulf War. This leaves Hurley non-plussed and unable to respond. Shannon is the cheerleader blond who doesn?t want to do anything except wait for the rescue ship. We even see her in one scene sunbathing. Her brother and she definitely don?t get along. They seem to argue every time they talk. I?m betting that will change was the season progresses. Walt is the African American boy who wanders off into the jungle calling for his dog, Vince. Aha, so that?s whom the Lab belongs too! He stops and looks at something on the ground?handcuffs. We saw those briefly in episode one and I remember then thinking the most logical illogical choice would be Kate. Watching Alias and the Alias DVD?s has made me a predictor of unquestionable talent. Sayid says he fixed the transceiver but because of the battery power, they need to go higher in order to give it a chance over a greater distance. Kate will go with him and tells Jack who is getting ready to operate on the man with a piece of shrapnel in his belly. By the end, not only is Kate and Sayid going, but Shannon and her brother volunteer, Charlie and Sawyer, the accuser of Sayid. Six head up the mountain. Walt sees a man (Terry O?Quinn) with a backgammon board. They talk and the man (we don?t know his name yet) explains the game. He holds up the white and black piece, calling them ?light? and ?dark?, which I think alludes to good and evil. He wants to know if Walt would like to know a secret. As the weeks progress I think we will see more good and evil among the survivors of the crash. The groupies on a hike are now high on a plateau, but Sayid thinks they are not high enough. There is an argument and suddenly a very loud familiar (to Kate and Charlie) sound. Something approaches and is coming fast. Everyone runs accept the tough guy, Sawyer, who pulls out a gun (where did he get that?). He fires off several shots, killing the beast. Everyone returns to find that he?s killed a BEAR???? ? and a POLAR bear at that. Good grief, now that was a shock. As they talk, Kate takes the gun from him. Everyone backs up, but all she wants to do is take it apart which with Sayid?s help she does. She gives him the clip and the gun back to Sawyer. A moment later, Sawyer pulls her to him, saying he knows her type. She tells him quietly he has no idea what her type is. Under some strain, she leans up against a tree and remembers where she was when on the plane. She was the prisoner in handcuffs sitting next to the man taking her back from to?well we don?t know yet. However, when the plane started breaking up, a suitcase hits him on the head, knocking him out. The oxygen masks fall, but her handcuffs over which a thick steel wire is looped prevent her from moving out of her seat. She searches his pockets frantically, finds the key, unlocks the cuffs, and pulls the mask down to her and one for him. Hummm, doesn?t sound like she?s a bad guy? She?s pulled back to reality by the group who are going to move higher. They get to a spot where Sayid sees the signal going out. He makes an effort but gets feedback. Someone else is transmitting from the island. He listens. A woman is pleading in French for help. Shannon finally stops whining; she speaks French and translates the message. According to her, the woman is alone. She is the last survivor. It has killed the rest of them. Someone else is on the island. Sayid however bursts their bubble. It is a continuous looped message that has been broadcasting for sixteen years and five months. Oh oh, there are going to be some unhappy people back on the beach. Speaking of the beach, the patient with the shrapnel has awakened, much to Jack?s distress, who is holding onto the open wound. Hurley has fainted. Suddenly the man leans forward grabbing Jack and says, ?Where is she?? By now, of course, we know it?s Kate. I?m hooked again. Like Alias, Lost is exciting and moves at a fast pace (if not interrupted by those damn commercials. Still I know someone has to pay the bill for shooting in Hawaii.) I?m glad they decided to show it at 8:00 in the evening on a Wednesday. It?s early enough for the kids and teens to watch. Its part fantasy (a Polar Bear?) and part real (reactions by various people under stress). By the way, I don?t watch promos any more. They are totally deceiving most of the time. I learned my lesson when watching Alias. ;) |

I have to agree with you about the promos! Glad we don't get them as often as here. But we got the Alias ones all the time! Nothing is ever what it seems...with Alias the word 'TRUTH' springs to mind
I have to say that I am not as impressed with LOSt as I have been with ALIAS. Granted, there's no Jennifer Garner, but there are too many characters for there to be any real developments, and too much assumption based on what we don't know. If ALIAS is anything to go by, we should find out why Kate got locked up and deported by mid-season. These characters could prove to be interesting though, so maybe I'll tune in for part 3 next week... :P |

There's Locke (Terry O'Quinn from ALias) and he's very good. Just go with the flow...you might be surprised. :boat: |

I'm hoping they jump up on the character revelations, but with however many characters and only one hour, I can understand how it can take so long. I do kinda like it, and there are certainly many similarities to ALIAS. I have decided to stick it out to at least Ep5 and see how it sticks to me after that. I'm all for giving it a chance :)

since they have 23 episodes they'll be fine.personally I was thoroughly impressed by not only the acting but the storylines. it left u guessing whose Kate why what did she do. its true JJ Abrams style. i mean they have some fascinating things there. why was there a polar bear on an island why was a message that was recorded 16 years and 5 months ago still repeating this is no mere island. and what in gods name is that creature that killed Greg Grunberg

That's true, but I'm not really in for the whole sci-fi thing. The drama of the plane crash is fine, the fact that they let a person 8months pregnant fly...Mr Sharpnel who I think was the marshall with Kate was missing a lot of facial damage...little things like that get to me.
But you're right, the acting was superb, the only thing that i'm not so huge on is that there was so little of the characters to grasp, even in the first two episodes. But like I said (and have been told), with so many characters it will take longer to develop them as much as it takes two characters to develop in one episode (say...Ephram and Andy in Everwood, or Rory and Lorelai in Gilmore Girls). As fun as it is to not know, I like to not be left guessing too much. |
