LOST ? Episode 1
?HOW DOES SOMETHING LIKE THAT HAPPEN??
By Lenafan

I wanted to write my column here a little bit differently since there will be two for the same show. Previous columns I have written were for A2A and CIA Headquarters about Alias and were long and involved. I hope you will allow me the privilege of expressing myself in a less exacting method than I used with them.

First, I honestly did like the show and I thought JJ Abrams did an excellent job of giving his viewers something exciting and spooky or scary.

Second, I began to wonder if the plane had landed on an island populated by a (dare I say it) lost dinosaur? (Shades of Jurassic Park). The roaring and stomping echoing throughout the crash scene on three occasions, instantly made me wonder if T-Rex were alive and well. JJ is smarter than that, I said to myself at least I would hope so.

Basically, the airplane crashed, or at least the middle part of it did, on a beach. During the course of the show, we saw the tail section disappear and the front of the plane break off. I?m sure no plane would actually break up in that manner, but it certainly made for a good storyline. We are introduced to the main character, Jack, (hooray another Jack, but he?s no Victor Garber) who we learn is a doctor. He has a buzz cut, is rugged and there?s a tattoo on his left upper arm. He?s the hero for sure.

Our other hero is Kate. (One word names with only one syllable are perfect hero and hero names.) She is the one who sews up Jack?s back and will stick close to him because he?s so much in command of himself and the situation. In other words, she?ll follow him anywhere. Smart girl.

Comic relief I think is Charlie, the rocker, complete with English/cockney accent, who is a member of a band called ?Drive Shaft.? He also feels that Jack is the Man and he will be safer tagging along with him and Kate, rather than staying behind with the others. Staying behind of course means when our hero and hero go off looking for the cockpit part of the plane, he?s the only one who wants to go with them. Naturally, the thing is out there and no one else is budging from the fires they built in order to signal the rescue party. They will come to know the truth, probably in Episode 2.

We do meet a diverse number of passengers who were in the middle compartment of the plane: There?s Jack, Kate and Charley, (Interestingly enough, Kate has yet to tell anyone what she did.) Terry O?Quinn (Kendall in Alias) who does not speak and keeps staring off into ?whatever?. The pregnant woman who is eight months along and probably has been designated to give birth while waiting to be rescued. The fat man looked after her while Jack was doing his best to treat the wounded. Later, we see him giving her extra food.

There are two Asians: a man and his wife. He obviously dominates her, even though she wants to be a part of the group. There is an African American man and his young son. A cheerleader type blond wearing what almost looks like a team uniform: short, short pleated skirt and top. She refuses to eat anything: she says she?ll eat on the rescue ship when it comes and not until then. (I?m sure she?ll break down by the next day, especially when Jack gets back.) Her brother is a little more pragmatic. There is also an African American woman who Jack resuscitates while making rounds of the wounded. Actually there are several others we haven?t had time to know, but given this is a new drama, I?m certain we will.

Ah yes, the DOG. A yellow lab is running loose on the island. Where did he come from? Possibly, he was in the luggage floor beneath the cockpit and his cage came loose. He looks well fed and healthy. Could it be that?hummm?knowing JJ?s penchant for the unusual and exciting, there could be other reasons.

Then there is the pair of handcuffs someone finds. Many possibilities arise from them. Who was wearing them? Who was the officer with a prisoner?

The scene with the pilot in the cockpit was pretty telling. (Did you notice it was Greg Grunberg from Alias? ? He and JJ are boyhood friends, knowing each other since grade school.) Back to the cockpit. Anyway, the pilot gives Jack a piece of information: they were a thousand miles off course and the rescue party will be looking for them in the wrong place.

As they speak, they are interrupted by crashing, roaring, growling and thunderous footsteps belonging to?what. The cockpit is shaking. The pilot moves to the window that is open to look out and suddenly is pulled out screaming. The plane is shaking and the three left alive run out. That part of the plane now falls flat.

IT is raining hard but they run pell-mell almost without watching where they are going. Kate finds shelter underneath a huge tree. Jack has gone back for Charlie who has fallen having caught one foot under some vines. No one seems to want to look behind them.

Kate is almost speechless with terror. Then Charlie joins her. Neither has seen Jack after he helped Charlie. Kate wants to find him. She stops though finding the pilot?s wings. Jack joins them. They look up to see the dead body of the pilot lying up high in the branches of a tree.

That?s it. For an ensemble cast, not a bad start. I?m sure we?ll get to know them all, little by little.

I hope you will become fans of LOST as we see their adventures unfold every week. JJ won?t disappoint us.

Hey B)

Just saw the first2instalments of LOST and am about to move to your other column (if there is one...haven't checked), but a very good summary of the first part. I noticed it was greg before the rest of my family (who thought I was crazy when I jumped up, pointed and said WEISS!!)

the first episode of Lost just aired here in Australia, and I taped it.

my brother told me he saw a giant rat, but i didn't believe him, thinking that would be too stupid an idea for this show.

when he showed me the spot (just after the co-pilot who wakes up gets eaten), i saw it too.

for about half a second, what seems to be a human-sized rat climbs through the plane.

are we imagining something, or is that actually a rat?

Not a rat, but there is something big coming into view for you. A bit jaw dropping, but not a rat.

Yeah we all know, but there's none on the island and he's going to have to face reality ... soon.
