There has to be a curse - the Tricia Tanaka (played by Sung Hi Lee - famous Korean nudey model - dont ask me how I know that) incident is testament to it. I mean, come on. A meteor?! This plus his grandad, his mom, the burning house?
But here's how I see it: this episode is about hope. Even when the chips are way, way, waaaay down; hope is the only thing that will carry you through. Even though everything is so crappy on toast on Craphole island, there has to be a ray of sunshine in there somewhere. And it is Hard Luck Hurley.
The VW coming to life and swerving the intrepid duo of doom from being dashed on the rocks in a fiery apocalypse shows you that it can't be all bad luck. Sure you may have a curse on you, but you CAN beat it. Nothing is predestined. There may be a 99% chance of death at the jaws of a disgruntled polar bear but there will always be that 1%, that slim chance that things may work out in the end.
And the way Desmundo's vision works probably is that he suddenly sees Charlie being struck by lightning, so he sets up a rod to deflect it. He suddenly sees Charlie drowning in the sea trying to save Claire. So he jumps in the ocean before our hobbit friend and eliminates the cause by saving her himself. That's why he cant tell Charlie how it's gonna happen, he doesn't know yet. He only seems to see it happen a little while before it actually happens. In a way, Charlie is lucky coz he suddenly has a guardian angel who can predict danger for him.
