Some thoughts on Desmond...
I have always seen him as a God-figure, from the first time we met him in Jack's running flashback, and so far, nothing has disuaded me.
1. Long hair and beard
2. He calls everyone "Brother."
3. In Locke's vision, he was a pilot, another popular analogy (God is my co-pilot bumper stickers, etc.)
4. He was the only one who came out of the implosion naked. A rebirth/resurrection?
I have two other "wacko" theories about Desmond. I don't really believe either of them. The first comes from me, and the second from a friend...
1. The electromagnetic field somehow cloned Desmond, which is why he was naked. Of course, this doesn't explain how he knew about Locke's speech.
2. No one except Hurley was seen interacting or even noticing Desmond. Was he even really there, or was he a vision like Dave? Wouldn't someone have offered him some pants? Again, this doesn't explain how Hurley would have predicted Locke's speech.
