OK Here Goes....
Well, I think the title may refer to entire "LOST" world vs. the "real" world. This book covers a lengthy time period (approx. 1760-1790) against the backdrop of the Seven Years War between England and France and the subsequent French Revolution. Given the soldier-like behavior of the others, a previous or ongoing war with the outside world is conceivable, as is the EM as a weapon.
Themes that jumped out at me:
1) Social and political unrest exist in the other's villiage. The opening sequence depicts a very unhappy Julia. If the villiage was set up as a utopian society at some point in the past for the purpose of science etc., it is not that way today.
2) In the book, a male lawyer is defending a male convict. The lawyer falls in love with the convict's fiance and eventually proves that he would sacrifice his life to save the man she loves. I personally think that Kate loves Sawyer, and that Jack will eventually sacrifice his life to save him.
