Liana heaved a heavy suitcase onto the pile, pausing to wipe the sweat from her brow. Everyone seemed to have been brought to shore now, the bodies pulled onto the beach a laid in a row on the sand. It was sickening to look at, and Liana carefully kept her gaze away. She envied those who dealt so well with death.
Alyssa felt the shaking in the plane. Turbulence. She didn’t mind, she was used to flying. There was the little blond boy sitting next to her. The poor kid’s family hadn't been able to get enough seats next to each other. He looked around nervously. “Hey, its all right. This is normal, it’s nothing to worry about.” She smiled at him, and he smiled a weakly as if to say “how would you know?” “Trust me, I know.” She smiled again to reassure him. The boy kept looking anxiously at a little golden watch on his wrist.
Her glass was shaking on the pull-out tray in front of her. Alyssa saw the fasten seatbelt sign come on, and the stewardess notified the passengers. She clicked hers together, watching as the little boy followed suit. There was a high-pitched noise, and the quivering of the plane increased. Alyssa’s smile faded. The boy was still checking his watch, his eyes fixed on it, afraid to look up. She pressed her back against the seat uncomfortably, clutching the armrests. Suddenly there was a tremendous ripping sound. The little boy screamed. She looked back and gasped as she saw that the tail section had been pulled away. Passengers flew backward out of the back of the plane. The oxygen masks came down, dangling before her face. She put hers on and reached over to help the little boy. She fumbled with his mask. Suddenly she was jolted forward, banging her head on the seat in front of her. She blacked out.
Liana felt the hot tears streaming down her face. She noticed a woman staring at her and wiped angrily at her eyes. Liana walked down the beach, continuing to collect the suitcases and put them in a pile. People began to gather around, searching through for their own bags. At last she found her backpack, and there were a few water bottles in the bottom and some snacks she had brought on the flight. A few minutes later, her suitcase appeared. She dragged it up the beach to the edge of the thick jungle and opened it, rummaging through its contents. At last she felt her fingers close over the thick, stiff leather. She pulled her hand free, and with it came the scabbard of her hunting knife. It had taken some work to get a permit to allow her to carry a knife on the plane, and now she was glad she had. She pulled the blade free, examining it. She tested the edge with her finger, wincing slightly as a bead of blood oozed forth.
"Hey you!" Liana hastily stuffed the knife back into its sheath and into her bag, before turning to face the person who was calling her. She grimaced as pain moved in a wave through her body, reacting to the sudden movement. Her shoulder was sticky with fresh blood.
"Yes?" She responded, choking slightly on her words.
"I need some help with this." The man motioned to a large piece of the fuselage. "Theres a..... someone is stuck under here." Liana blinked and looked at the ground.
"i'm... sorry. i can't." She walked away, leaving the man staring frustratedly at her as she left.
